Software Engineer, R2 Gateway
The Software Engineer for Confidential Client's R2 Gateway team is responsible for designing, implementing, and operating the S3-compatible API gateway that handles all object storage requests with high reliability, low latency, and strict API compatibility. This role involves building scalable distributed systems on Confidential Client Workers and Kubernetes, managing authentication, routing, rate limiting, and collaborating across teams to ensure seamless integration with storage and metadata layers. The position emphasizes leveraging AI tools to accelerate development and requires participation in on-call rotations and incident management.
About Careertakes
π Important disclosure: Careertakes is a third-party recruiting platform supporting this hiring process. If selected, you will be employed directly by our client, a company in IT services & IT consulting, technology, internet platforms, and computer & network security.

Overview
This role is for an engineer focused on the request path for an S3-compatible object storage gateway (R2-style). You will design, implement, operate, and improve the API gateway that handles authentication, routing, rate limiting, and coordination with storage and metadata systems β delivering low-latency, highly available access at global scale. The confidential client operates at the intersection of large-scale distributed systems, storage infrastructure, and edge computing.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate a high-throughput S3-compatible API gateway serving every object operation (PUT, GET, LIST, DELETE), ensuring correctness and low latency.
- Implement and run production services on edge and cloud platforms (e.g., Cloud Workers-style runtimes and Kubernetes).
- Own the end-to-end request path: authentication & authorization, routing, rate limiting, retries, and error handling.
- Deliver projects from design docs through implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and post-launch maintenance.
- Improve reliability, performance, and observability; reduce operational toil and ramp into legacy code paths as needed.
- Participate in on-call rotations, incident response, and postmortems to raise reliability standards.
- Use AI-assisted tools and workflows to accelerate development, debugging, and operational tasks.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with storage, metadata, networking, and platform teams on API contracts and capacity planning.
Minimum Qualifications
- 3+ years experience building or operating large-scale distributed systems with strict latency and reliability requirements.
- Strong programming experience in one or more of: Rust, TypeScript, Go, or similar languages.
- Practical experience designing or operating high-throughput APIs: authentication, routing, rate limiting, and backward-compatible API evolution.
- Familiarity with cloud and edge infrastructure concepts (object storage, HTTP/API gateways, edge compute, service-oriented architectures).
- Demonstrated understanding of reliability and observability practices: monitoring, alerting, performance tuning, and incident response.
- Strong written and verbal communication; ability to explain tradeoffs and coordinate across teams.
- Authorization to work in the U.S. for roles based in San Francisco, CA (candidates must meet any local work-authorization requirements).
Preferred / Desirable
- Hands-on experience with the S3 API surface or comparable object-storage APIs.
- Experience with Cloud Workers, Durable Objects, or other edge compute platforms.
- Prior work on API gateway, request-path, or storage metadata systems.
- Solid background in performance optimization and high-throughput distributed systems.
- Comfortable and productive using AI coding assistants as part of a daily workflow.
Location & Work Model
- This position is based in San Francisco, CA (local interview or in-person attendance at client hubs may be requested during the interview process). The authoritative job location is: San Francisco, CA, USA.
- Candidates must be eligible to work in the U.S.; offers may be contingent on authorization to receive certain software or technology under U.S. export laws.
What We Value
- Reliability-first engineering: correctness, observability, and performance on every call.
- Curiosity and ownership: engineers who write clear design docs and drive projects end-to-end.
- Collaboration across teams to deliver durable, maintainable systems at global scale.
- Responsible, inclusive behavior and respect for usersβ privacy and security.
