What You’ll Do

This role sits on the Compiler Team within the Confidential Client’s Quantum Software organization. You will design, build, and maintain quantum compilation software and help drive co-design across applications, algorithms, hardware, and control. Day-to-day work combines hands-on coding, code review, system design, and R&D.

  • Conduct R&D focused on quantum compilation and compiler optimizations
  • Implement and deploy software optimizations to the Superstaq cloud platform using industry-standard engineering practices (linting, testing, type-checking, documentation)
  • Collaborate with experimental physicists, algorithm teams, and software engineers to turn theoretical ideas into practical implementations
  • Support customers using the platform and respond to technical requests in a timely, professional manner
  • Contribute to technical proposals, program execution, and cross-functional program goals
  • Publish and present research at conferences and in journals as appropriate
  • Mentor and collaborate with teammates to build a high-performing, research-oriented engineering culture

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, physics, or a closely related field
  • Strong software development skills; fluency in Python preferred (C/C++ or Julia experience acceptable with ability to upskill quickly)
  • Experience using and ideally modifying open-source quantum frameworks such as Cirq or Qiskit
  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills; able to communicate across technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative, cross-functional, matrixed environment
  • Demonstrated ability to learn complex topics quickly and solve technical problems resourcefully
  • Ability to be in the office any three days per week (hybrid schedule)
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 10%

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in quantum computation, physics, computer science, or a related field
  • Knowledge of quantum computing topics: error correction/fault tolerance, native gate decomposition, qubit mapping/routing, variational algorithms
  • Experience with advanced open-source tools (for example, Stim) and modifying quantum frameworks
  • Familiarity with professional software engineering best practices: test coverage, integration tests, type checking, CI/CD, and version control
  • Backend development experience (FastAPI, PostgreSQL/SQLAlchemy) and cloud platforms (GCP, AWS)
  • Experience with GitHub workflows, security best practices (access control, encryption at rest, key rotation, logging)
  • Exposure to front-end or GUI development (HTML/CSS, React, PyQt) is a plus

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $145,000 to $170,000 per year

Location & Work Model

  • Job location: Chicago, IL — hybrid (onsite at least three days per week)
