Role Overview

Careertakes is assisting a confidential client to hire a Python Software Engineer (Contract) to join a Cloud Services engineering team modernizing an Enterprise File System (EFS) platform. The core mission is to migrate a legacy, Perl-based distributed application to a Python-based microservices architecture, design API-driven services, and enable scalable containerized deployments.

This is a 12-month contract role with a hybrid work model in Jersey City, NJ.


What You’ll Do

  • Design, develop, and evolve the Enterprise File System (EFS) platform as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Migrate legacy Perl-based distributed components to Python microservices.
  • Design and implement RESTful, API-driven services (OpenAPI 3.0) and ensure consistent API contracts.
  • Build scalable, containerized deployments and integrate services into the broader platform.
  • Produce high-quality code that meets functional, non-functional, and enterprise compliance/security requirements.
  • Write and maintain unit and integration tests; participate in code reviews and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Document technical designs, runbooks, and training materials; collaborate with operations and subject-matter experts.
  • Follow enterprise development standards and security policies.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven experience building production systems with Python.
  • Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs using the OpenAPI 3.0 specification.
  • Experience developing large-scale back-end applications and microservices.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain complex distributed systems.
  • Familiarity with Agile workflows and tools such as Jira, Confluence, Git, and Bitbucket.
  • Experience with CI/CD practices and tools (e.g., Jenkins, Ansible).
  • Strong Git-based source control and modern development workflow experience.
  • Experience working across multiple architectural layers and writing technical documentation.
  • Experience using agentic developer tools (GitHub Copilot experience preferred).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes and/or OpenShift.
  • Experience operating containerized microservices environments.
  • Familiarity with NFS and distributed file system concepts.
  • Background in Perl for legacy migration scenarios is a plus.
  • Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and NetApp NAS devices.
  • Experience analyzing operational data with Oracle SQL and Splunk.
  • Automation experience using Ansible.

Contract / Location & Compensation

  • Location: Jersey City, NJ — hybrid (on-site collaboration expected).
  • Employment type: Contractor (12-month engagement).
  • Compensation: $65.00–$68.00 per hour (hourly rate as provided by the client).
  • Note: Final offer, start date, and benefits (if any) are determined by the hiring organization.
