What You’ll Do
This entry-level Protection & Control Applications Engineer role (Protection & Control Applications Engineer 1) supports distribution substation capital projects and reliability teams. You will learn under supervision and contribute to individual engineering tasks related to protection and control (P&C) for distribution systems in Forest, GA.
- Implement standard relay philosophies and settings for distribution substation capital projects.
- Apply requested settings changes from Distribution Reliability work groups and validate those changes.
- Review distribution substation prints and protection schemes for dependability, reliability, and security.
- Analyze protection zones and P&C equipment applications to recommend appropriate settings or design changes.
- Perform power system modeling and fault studies for internal requests, customer support, and capital projects.
- Maintain relay asset information in repositories such as CAPE and STOMP.
- Ensure deliverables comply with NERC, SERC, and other applicable industry standards and procedures.
- Use business unit software (CAPE, STOMP, Vault) with growing proficiency.
- Work collaboratively with field staff, design engineering staff, and vendors; escalate issues and seek supervisory review for non-routine decisions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (electrical power preferred) or equivalent.
- 0–5 years of related experience in protection & control, power systems, or substation engineering.
- Basic understanding of power system fundamentals, fault analysis, and protection principles.
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn CAPE, STOMP, Vault, or similar relay/asset tools.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow engineering specifications, policies, and procedures.
- Good communication skills and a positive, team-oriented attitude.
Preferred / Nice-to-Have
- Coursework or hands-on experience in power system modeling, relay coordination, or fault studies.
- Exposure to distribution substation design and relay settings implementation.
- Knowledge of NERC and regional reliability standards (SERC) and compliance requirements.
- Internships, co-op experience, or project work with utilities or engineering firms.
