Overview

Confidential Client is seeking a Professional Tutor (English) to provide in-person tutoring that strengthens students’ understanding of English coursework, study habits, and academic outcomes. This role supports higher-education students, including an inter-tribal student population, and aligns with university mission and cultural values. Location: Lawrence, KS.

• Estimated annual pay: $61,421 (per source)

What You’ll Do (Primary Responsibilities)

• Provide comprehensive in-person English tutoring—one-on-one and small group sessions—to reinforce course material and study strategies.
• Assist in the academic area of expertise and coordinate with academic leaders to validate credentials as needed.
• Support adjunct instructors by facilitating access to both online and physical historical and curricular resources.
• Understand and incorporate the mission, vision, and cultural values of the partner university into tutoring approaches.
• Complete required trainings from the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Education, and the partnering university.
• Use culturally sensitive practices when working with a diverse inter-tribal student population.
• Participate in semester assessments of tutoring services and submit evaluations by the Friday of grade-submission week.
• Perform other duties as assigned that support tutoring services and student success.

Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in English, education, or a closely related field, or a relevant graduate degree (exceptions apply for Indigenous language instructors).
• Satisfactory completion of a background check (required).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Clear, effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Comfortable using technology: email, learning management systems, and virtual resources to support students.
• Passion for education and subject-matter expertise in English.
• Familiarity with curriculum design, pedagogy, and aligning instruction to learning outcomes.
• Ability to work respectfully and effectively with diverse, inter-tribal student populations.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have

• Experience tutoring in higher education or Tribal Colleges and Universities.
• Familiarity with the history and student demographics of Haskell Indian Nations University or similar institutions.
• Prior experience conducting academic assessments or program evaluations.
