What You’ll Do
This entry-level Power System Design Engineer role supports power systems design, implementation, and commissioning for complex test and research facilities. You will join a multidisciplinary engineering team and contribute to projects from design through commissioning.
- Develop electrical drawings including one-line diagrams, elementary wiring diagrams, power system plans, lighting plans, and installation details
- Perform power distribution design tasks: load flow, short-circuit analysis, arc-flash assessments, and safety checks
- Develop protection and coordination schemes, transfer schemes, and perform relay coordination studies
- Size electrical components, cables, conduit, and determine equipment spacing using load calculations
- Specify major electrical equipment: substations, switchgear, distribution panels, MCCs, transformers, disconnects, and drives for low- and medium-voltage AC and DC systems
- Design lighting systems for test facilities and assess illumination quality
- Interface facility equipment using hardwired control and industrial networks (SCADA/PLC/HMI integrations)
- Apply NEC, NESC, NFPA 70E, and other applicable codes and standards
- Participate in quality processes: peer checks, compliance with standards, and documentation control
- Support factory assembly, onsite installation, startup, checkout, and commissioning (domestic and international)
- Communicate technical status to clients and internal management; coordinate with other disciplines
- Estimate system design, materials, installation, commissioning, and resource scheduling
- Lead small to medium power-system projects through design, fabrication, implementation, testing, and commissioning
What We’re Looking For

- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- 0–3 years’ experience in power-distribution design, implementation, or commissioning (entry-level)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Experience with SKM, ETAP, SEL synchroWAVe, ArcPro, or similar power-analysis tools is a plus
- Familiarity or interest in: switchgear, substations, MCCs, protective relays, drives, grounding, lightning protection, lighting design, smart-grid/microgrid concepts, and SCADA
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work on teams and independently
- U.S. Citizenship (required where the client/contract mandates citizenship or security clearance)
- Commitment to safety and adherence to codes and standards
- Willingness to travel to client sites for installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting
Compensation & Benefits
- Compensation range: $61,660 - $101,600 per year (good-faith estimate; actual offer will depend on experience, skills, and location)

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Primary work setting: office, lab, or indoor construction site (>90%)
- Field work: occasional outdoor site visits and installations (5–15%)
- Travel to customer sites for meetings, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting (>10%)
- Lifting up to 50 lbs. (<5%)
- Proximity to electrical circuits including up to 120VAC and higher-voltage systems (safety PPE required)
- Required PPE may include eye/hearing protection, arc-flash protection, and shock protection
- Regular attendance in office is expected; standard schedule described by the client may apply (e.g., alternative weekly hours)
