Role overview

Confidential Client is hiring an entry-level Power Electronics Engineer I to join a multidisciplinary team working on advanced aerospace and defense power-conversion systems. This is an onsite, full-time role based in El Segundo, CA. The position requires U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret-level security clearance (an active clearance may be required at hire).

What you’ll do

  • Support design and development of power conversion hardware (AC/DC and DC/DC converters, motor/servo drives, filters, and power system building blocks).
  • Create and update schematics with guidance from senior engineers; assist with component selection and PCB layout reviews.
  • Perform basic simulation and analysis (SPICE, LTspice) and participate in worst-case/derating analyses.
  • Assist magnetics development: prepare calculations, review specifications, and coordinate builds/tests.
  • Help evaluate and characterize modern power devices (SiC, GaN) and associated gate drivers.
  • Support EMI/EMC design and testing in accordance with aerospace standards; collect basic test data and setup.
  • Conduct hands-on lab work: prototype bring-up, debugging, data capture, and hardware characterization.
  • Prepare test plans, procedures, and verification documentation under mentorship.
  • Collaborate with systems, digital design, mechanical/thermal, manufacturing, and integration teams.
  • Support requirements tracing, design reviews, and root-cause investigations with guided testing and documentation.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Internship, co-op, project team, or academic lab experience in power electronics, circuit design, or hardware testing.
  • U.S. citizenship required; ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret-level security clearance.

Preferred qualifications

  • Exposure to aerospace or defense standards (MIL‑STD‑704, MIL‑STD‑461, DO‑160).
  • Familiarity with switched-mode converter topologies (buck, boost, flyback, bridge) and motor control.
  • Basic understanding of digital control concepts (DSP/MCU-based control loops).
  • Experience or coursework with SPICE/LTspice, MATLAB/Simulink, magnetics design, or thermal modeling.
  • Hands-on lab experience with oscilloscopes, power supplies, and electronic loads.
  • Knowledge of SiC/GaN device characteristics and basic gate-driver design.
  • Understanding of derating, reliability fundamentals, and WCCA concepts.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams.

Compensation & benefits

Location & work type

  • Onsite — El Segundo, CA (primary work location). Candidates should expect primarily onsite work and may be asked to attend in-person steps of the interview process.
  • Must be eligible for and able to maintain U.S. government security clearance (DoD Secret required).

Why join

  • Start your career contributing to aerospace and defense power systems with mentorship from experienced engineers.
  • Gain hands-on design, test, and integration experience across hardware and systems domains.
