What You’ll Do

Confidential Client is seeking a sworn, entry-level Campus Police Officer to join its Department of Public Safety team. As a Patrol Officer you will help preserve life, property, and the rights of the university community by enforcing laws and campus regulations and providing high-quality public safety services.

Key responsibilities:

• Perform foot and vehicle patrols across campus and assigned posts to deter crime and provide a visible public safety presence.
• Investigate incidents, take initial reports, prepare written case and patrol reports, and conduct follow-up investigations.
• Make arrests or issue citations when appropriate and process detainees; testify in court as needed.
• Provide first-aid assistance and request emergency medical services when required.
• Operate department vehicles in day/night and inclement weather conditions.
• Support radio dispatch, monitor audio/video security systems, and relieve or assist Police Telecommunicators as needed.
• Assist and coordinate with local police, fire, and emergency agencies during assigned emergencies.
• Provide executive protection and escort services for campus dignitaries, visitors, and community members as assigned.
• Maintain departmental records and assist with administrative duties such as scheduling, filing, and document management.
• Participate in community-oriented policing and crime-prevention programming; represent the department with professionalism and discretion.

Workload expectations:

• This is a part-time, sworn position. Overtime may be required.
• Training and certification requirements will be administered per Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board rules and departmental in-service programs.
• A Physical Fitness Test and electronic exam are planned for October 2026.

Qualifications

Required (minimum):

• High school diploma or equivalent. Documentation confirming completion must be attached with application (college transcripts may substitute).
• Valid driver’s license.
• No convictions that violate the Illinois Police Training Act (50 ILCS 705 et seq.) or crimes involving moral turpitude.
• Eligibility for bonding, if required.
• At least 21 years of age at time of employment.
• Successful completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Officers’ Training course as prescribed by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board, or willingness/ability to complete during the probationary period.

Preferred:

• Bachelor’s degree in criminology or a related field.
• Current law enforcement certification or demonstrated ability to attain certification.

Documentation required with application:

• High school diploma (or college transcripts as substitute).

• List of three professional references (references contacted only for finalists).

Residency & other requirements:

• Illinois residency is required at the time of application.
• Veterans may be eligible for preference points—submit DD214, NGB22, discharge orders, or DD256 as applicable by the posting deadline.

Compensation & Benefits

• Hourly rate: $27.19 per hour (rate will increase after a successful 12-month probationary period).
• This position is part of a union (Metropolitan Alliance of Police, Chapter 717).

Additional Information

• Training: Successful candidates will complete required academy and in-service training and must not carry a service weapon until firearm training is completed and certified.
• Testing: Physical fitness and electronic assessment details will be provided; the next scheduled Physical Fitness Test is planned for October 2026.
• Work environment: Requires extensive public contact and the exercise of judgment, discretion, and adherence to constitutional and statutory limits when using force.
• Applicant screening: Background checks and documentation verification (education, licenses, residency) will be required. Candidates who lack certain certifications may be hired contingent upon completing required training during probation.
