Role overview
This posting is for Police Officer Recruits for a municipal police department recruiting class with an Academy start date of 07/06/2027. Selected candidates will complete entry testing, a conditional offer/background process, attend the Police Academy, and — upon successful completion — be sworn in as Police Officers.
What You’ll Do
Police Officer Recruits will train and prepare to perform the duties of a Patrol Officer. Key responsibilities include:
- Learn and perform law enforcement duties including maintaining order, enforcing local/state/federal laws, and protecting public safety.
- Respond to calls for service, investigate incidents, collect and preserve evidence, and prepare reports.
- Participate in academy and field training, including defensive tactics, firearms, emergency vehicle operations, and community policing.
- Coordinate with other agencies and provide court testimony as required.
- Meet physical demands of the job: lifting, running, restraining combative individuals, working outdoors and in varying conditions.
Who We’re Looking For (Minimum Qualifications & Preferences)
Candidates must meet the department’s minimum standards at the time of hire:
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Must be at least 21 years old by date of hire.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national by date of hire (lawful requirement for this position).
- Valid State of Alaska driver’s license at date of hire (applicants relocating must obtain an Alaska license as required).
- Must meet Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC) and department standards for criminal history, controlled substance use, and driving history.
- No felony convictions after age 18.
- No marijuana use within one (1) year of application date.
- APSIN/NCIC certification within 30 days of hire and APSC certification within 13 months of hire.
- Satisfactory Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) clearance at time of hire.

Pay, Schedule & Location
- Pay range: $42.41 - $58.34 per hour.
- Schedule: 4/10’s work schedule (subject to operational needs).
- Primary work location: Anchorage, Alaska (address: 3760 W. Dimond Blvd). Candidates should be able to report to the academy and training locations as scheduled.
Selection & Pre-employment Process
Qualified applicants may be invited to complete an entry testing process and physical Job Task Simulation Test (JTST). Key stages after passing entry tests include:
- Job Task Simulation Test (JTST) — a timed, physically demanding obstacle/run (completion standards apply).
- Conditional Offer & Preliminary Interview — structured behavioral interview and review of driving/substance history.
- Background Investigation — employment, criminal, credit, driving, military checks; interviews with references and contacts.
- Psychological Assessment — written exam and interview with a licensed psychologist.
- Polygraph Examination.
- Command Review and Final Chief’s Selection.
- Pre-employment medical exam, drug screen, and verification of required certifications/licenses.
Notes on testing and re-application:
- Written entry test passing score is required to advance; results valid for two years.
- Applicants who falsify application information will be disqualified.
- Unsuccessful applicants at certain phases may be ineligible to re-apply for specified timeframes (e.g., six months or two years as outlined in the process).
Physical & Technical Requirements
Candidates must be able to safely perform essential physical tasks of patrol work, including but not limited to:
- Running, lifting (up to ~70 lbs), dragging/rescue simulations, climbing, kneeling, and extended periods standing.
- Use of firearms and emergency vehicle operation (training provided).
- Vision and hearing standards (normal color discrimination and corrected visual acuity as required).
- Ability to complete the JTST within required time limits while wearing duty equipment.
Education Pay & Benefits
- Educational pay per the collective bargaining agreement: 4% for an Associate’s degree and 8% for a Bachelor’s degree (after successful completion of probation).
- Participation in employer benefits consistent with municipal employment (details provided by employer during hiring).
