Police Academy Trainee

What You’ll Do
The Police Academy Trainee is an entry-level, non-sworn position sponsored by the Confidential Client to attend an MPTC-authorized Recruit Officer Course (ROC) and obtain POST certification in Massachusetts. Under close supervision, you will complete academy requirements, participate in pre- and post-academy department training, and—upon successful completion and available openings—be eligible for appointment as a sworn Police Officer.
- Attend and successfully complete the MPTC Recruit Officer Course (classroom, scenario-based training, firearms, defensive tactics, emergency driving, physical fitness).
- Meet or exceed MPTC and academy testing benchmarks and performance evaluations.
- Comply with academy rules, regulations, and codes of conduct.
- Participate in Confidential Client pre-academy orientation and post-academy Field Training Officer (FTO) program.
- Maintain required documentation, logs, and training records.
- Represent the Confidential Client professionally and demonstrate integrity, discretion, and respect for a diverse campus community.
- Participate in additional training or remedial instruction as assigned.
- Perform related duties to support public safety initiatives and department operations.
Qualifications
Basic requirements (must be met at timeframes specified by the academy/department):
- Must be at least 21 years old by the start date of the police academy (or as required by policy).
- United States citizen.
- High school diploma or GED required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field strongly preferred.
- Valid driver’s license (Massachusetts preferred or ability to obtain MA license prior to appointment).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms (LTC) per state law and department policy.
- Willingness and ability to work any shift (days, evenings, nights), weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime.
MPTC & POST eligibility:
- Must meet Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) eligibility for the full-time Recruit Officer Course, including sponsorship by the Confidential Client and successful completion of pre-admission physical, medical, and psychological screenings.
- Ability and commitment to complete approximately 800 hours of academy curriculum per MPTC standards.
- Must meet baseline requirements for Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification (no disqualifying convictions or prior POST decertifications, good moral character, successful background investigation).

Compensation & Benefits
- Trainee pay during the academy: $30.00 per hour.
- Estimated annual salary (post-academy/entry-level estimate shown on source): $57,155 per year — estimated.
- After becoming a sworn officer, pay and progression follow the Confidential Client’s tiered pay structure and collective bargaining agreements where applicable.

Working Conditions & Other Details
- Work performed in classroom, training facilities, firing ranges, driving courses, and outdoor environments in all weather.
- Training includes extended periods of standing, walking, running, physical exertion, and exposure to realistic scenarios (simulated weapons, loud noises, stressful situations).
- Must be willing to wear issued uniforms and equipment and to carry a firearm upon appointment as a sworn officer.
- Standard schedule: 40 hours per week (shift work required once appointed as an officer).
- This position requires on-site attendance at Confidential Client locations and designated training academies.
Pre-Employment & Hiring Process
- Appointment is contingent on successful completion of all pre-employment background screenings, medical and psychological exams, drug/alcohol testing, motor vehicle record checks, and any academy entrance requirements.
- Continued employment and progression to sworn officer status contingent on successful completion of the MPTC Recruit Officer Course, POST certification, successful Field Training Officer program completion, and maintenance of performance and conduct standards.
