Position summary
This posting is for a Part-time Educator (On-Call Conservation Interpreter) supporting a confidential client in Dallas, TX. This is an entry-level, variable-hour role (maximum 29 hours/week) delivering mission-driven education and interpretive programming on- and off-site. Evening, weekend, and holiday availability required. This assignment concludes in late November.
What You’ll Do
- Deliver engaging, mission-driven interpretive programs and short-form presentations to inspire conservation action among guests, students, and program participants.
- Lead and support education programs, including camps and outreach, tailored to diverse age groups and learning styles.
- Communicate conservation priorities with scientific accuracy and enthusiasm; adapt messaging to different audiences.
- Assist in developing, revising, and documenting program content, lesson plans, and activity materials.
- Maintain records, complete reports and surveys, and assist with program-related research when needed.
- Use best practices in interpretation and informal education to build interest and empathy for wildlife.
- Participate in guest-engagement initiatives in accordance with the client’s guest engagement policy.
- Assist with exhibit upkeep and light maintenance (painting, bio-fact repair, garden care) as assigned.
- Train and mentor volunteers, interns, and new interpreters when assigned.
- Collaborate with other departments on special tours, media events, and public-relations activities.
- Support zoo-wide committees and initiatives that further departmental and organizational goals.
- Follow all safety protocols and participate in emergency response as required.
- Help maintain park appearance by picking up litter and promoting conservation programs (including AZA SAFE initiatives).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in interpretation, biology, education, conservation, or a related field plus ~1 year of interpretation/education experience — OR an Associate’s degree plus ~2 years’ experience.
- Excellent in-person presentation and public-engagement skills.
- Knowledge of interpretation best practices; NAI (National Association for Interpretation) certification is a plus.
- Strong natural history and wildlife conservation knowledge with attention to scientific accuracy.
- Comfortable working with and handling live animals as part of programs.
- Bilingual English/Spanish fluency is a plus.
- Ability to create welcoming, inclusive experiences for diverse guests and participants.
- Self-motivated, flexible, collaborative team player with strong problem-solving skills.
- Effective oral and written communication; solid recordkeeping and ability to follow established procedures.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (may be required to operate client vehicles).
- Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening, background check, and TB test, as applicable.
Schedule, Compensation & Physical Requirements
- Employment type: Part-time, variable hours (maximum 29 hours per week). Must be available for evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Contract/end date: Position concludes in late November (seasonal assignment).
- Estimated annualized pay (for transparency): $29,898 per year — prorated to actual hours worked. This is an estimate provided by the source and may vary based on hours scheduled.
- Physical demands: Must be able to walk, stand, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head, climb stairs and ladders, and lift/carry up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Reliable, punctual attendance required.
