Position overview and responsibilities

The Confidential Client is seeking an entry-level OPS Environmental Specialist I to join their Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration — Molecular Biology section in Tallahassee, FL. This role supports laboratory sample preparation for quantitative PCR (qPCR) analysis and general laboratory maintenance to ensure high-quality data for environmental and resource agency work.

• Primary duties include sample filtration, extraction, reagent and standard preparation, equipment cleaning and calibration, and data entry into LIMS.
• The position participates in glassware cleaning, laboratory cleanliness, field sampling, and cross-training activities as needed.

Key responsibilities

• Perform sample filtration and DNA/RNA extraction for qPCR analyses.
• Prepare reagents, standards, and media for laboratory analyses.
• Perform quality control tasks and pipette calibrations following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Operate, clean, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment (balances, autoclaves, centrifuges, vortexers, etc.).
• Record reagent and sample information in LIMS and maintain accurate laboratory records.
• Participate in glassware cleaning, general lab housekeeping, and field sampling when required.
• Assist with cross-training and other duties as assigned.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities

• Experience preparing reagents and standards.
• Experience with DNA extraction methods.
• Knowledge of general microbiology and molecular biology principles.
• Understanding of laboratory QA/QC principles and methods.
• Proficiency using standard scientific laboratory equipment.
• Skill in collecting, recording, and interpreting scientific data.
• Ability to prioritize workload, follow SOPs, and work independently.
• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and internet resources.
• Ability to use personal protective equipment and safely handle chemicals.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work well in teams.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as needed.

Minimum qualifications

• At least four years of verifiable related experience in biological, natural, environmental, or physical sciences — OR post-secondary degrees from an accredited college or university majoring in those fields may be substituted year-for-year.
• Official transcripts will be required from the selected candidate to confirm qualifications.
• Valid driver’s license.

Preferred qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific field.
• Additional experience with DNA extraction methods and qPCR workflows.

Compensation & benefits

• Pay: $23.38 per hour.
• Estimated annual compensation (for full-time equivalent): approximately $38,008 per year (estimated).
