Role Overview
Confidential client is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician I to support ophthalmology clinic operations in Boston, MA. This entry-level clinical role performs patient workups, routine vision screenings, diagnostic imaging, and assists physicians with in‑office procedures to ensure efficient, high-quality patient care.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a healthcare‑related setting
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, or obtain within three (3) months of hire
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field (preferred)
- Completion of ophthalmic/optometric or medical assistant training program and/or AAO Home Study Course
- Previous experience in an ophthalmic practice
- Familiarity with electronic scheduling systems and EHRs
Key Responsibilities
- Obtain and document patient history including chief complaint, medications, allergies, ocular and medical history
- Perform screenings and tasks ordered by the physician (visual acuity, lensometry, refraction, keratometry, pupil evaluation, intraocular pressure, instill eye drops, etc.)
- Operate and assist with diagnostic imaging and testing such as OCT, corneal topography, visual fields, and IOL Master
- Prepare consent forms and assist the physician with in‑office procedures as directed
- Set up and maintain exam rooms: stock supplies, ensure equipment readiness, and follow cleaning/disinfection protocols
- Assist with calibration and basic maintenance of ophthalmic equipment
- Support clinic flow and scribe exam components into the Electronic Health Record as required
- Comply with local, state, and federal regulations applicable to ophthalmic practice
- May participate in clinical research activities when applicable
Physical Requirements
- Close contact with patients of all ages, with potential exposure to blood and needles
- Ability to assist patients from wheelchairs to exam chairs and escort between floors as needed
- May be required to float to satellite offices; reliable transportation required
- Prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, and stretching typical of a clinic environment
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of ophthalmic terminology, basic anatomy, and eye physiology
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with elderly and sensory‑impaired patients
- Clear verbal communication to explain tests and reduce patient anxiety
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work in fast‑paced, high‑volume clinics
- Self‑motivated, energetic, and able to function independently while collaborating with the care team
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay range: $21.53 - $26.91 per hour (based on full‑time equivalent and minimum qualifications). Individual offers consider experience, certifications, education, skills, and internal equity.
