Role Overview

Confidential Client is seeking an Operations Specialist - Automation to support field production and automation activities in Midland, TX. This hands-on role focuses on well and surface production support, instrumentation, basic automation troubleshooting (SCADA/PLC), and data-driven recommendations to optimize well performance and uptime.


Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for surveillance of field operations and maintaining production-related databases and records
  • Provide technical and mechanical assistance to production operations personnel
  • Collect field data, evaluate performance, and recommend well optimization actions
  • Calibrate and verify instrumentation; install and maintain low-voltage devices and sensors
  • Prepare and manage work orders, tickets, and administrative reports in a timely manner
  • Implement and oversee contractor quality assurance processes on site
  • Observe and report abnormal or unsafe conditions related to surface production equipment
  • Communicate with operators to schedule and review specialist duties
  • Support preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and corrective actions
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet production and safety objectives

Technical Skills & Software

  • Basic to intermediate Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Outlook, Word)
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific systems where applicable: SCADA, eMaint/CMMS, WellView, Aries, AFE Navigator, Spotfire, SAP
  • Instrumentation skills: calibrate and scale 4–20 mA devices, Hart communicator use, pressure transmitters, level sensors (guided wave radar, float probes)
  • Networking/communications: TCP/IP basics, RTU RS485 Modbus, modem and radio configuration (900 MHz, 2.4–5.0 GHz), cellular modem support
  • Electrical fundamentals: low-voltage DC systems (24–48 VDC), basic 110 VAC awareness, relay and fuse replacement, wiring schematic troubleshooting
  • Ability to download and use device support software to configure, troubleshoot, and validate measurement devices

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 2+ years of related work experience (oil & gas experience preferred)
  • Proven capability to work independently in field environments and as part of a team
  • Strong troubleshooting mindset with attention to safety and regulatory compliance
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for reporting and cross-functional coordination
  • Valid state driver’s license and a driving record that meets Confidential Client’s vehicle eligibility requirements (ability to operate a motor vehicle to travel between well sites)
  • Must be able to perform required physical tasks (see Physical Demands below)

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate degree or bachelor’s degree in a related technical field preferred

Physical Demands & Safety

  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions and field environments
  • Move, transport, and position equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Manipulate valves, gauges, and other control mechanisms; climb up to 30 feet when required
  • Stand and walk for prolonged periods
  • Follow all safety procedures and PPE requirements; report hazards immediately

Location & Travel

  • This position is based in Midland, TX and requires travel between well sites in the local operating area. On-call or shift work may be required depending on operational needs.
