Nursing Assistant
The Nursing Assistant at Confidential Client provides essential patient care under the supervision of licensed nursing staff, assisting patients with physical and behavioral health needs in various care settings including outpatient, home, and long-term care. This role involves close observation, use of medical equipment, effective communication with patients and healthcare teams, and may include mentorship responsibilities for new assistants. What You’ll Do
This Nursing Assistant (NA) provides direct patient care as part of a nursing team under the supervision of licensed nursing staff. Typical responsibilities include:
- Provide basic and intermediate nursing support to patients/residents in outpatient, inpatient, long-term care or community settings
- Assist with activities of daily living (bathing, feeding, mobility, toileting)
- Monitor and report changes in patients’ physical and emotional status to the supervising nurse
- Use and maintain simple diagnostic and treatment equipment (e.g., bladder scan, CPM device, glucometer) and collect specimens as directed
- Contribute to the completion of nurse care plans and support patient recovery goals
- Assist with behavior management and emergency interventions (basic life support, bleeding control) while awaiting additional help
- Serve as a preceptor/peer mentor when assigned (GS-5 level duties may include orientation support)
Qualifications
Minimum requirements (candidates must meet one of the following as applicable):
- United States Citizenship (non-citizens may only be appointed when recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible, per applicable policy)
- Six months of general experience demonstrating ability to learn NA duties
- OR one year of education beyond high school with coursework related to nursing/health care
- OR completion of an intensive, occupation-related training program for Nursing Assistants (may meet GS-3 experience requirement)
- Proficiency in spoken and written English per VA Handbook standards (applicable requirement in source role)
- Candidates may qualify under grandfathering provisions if they meet criteria in the applicable qualification standard (only applicable to certain current employees)
Grade-level guidance (selection may be made at GS-03, GS-04 or GS-05 depending on experience/education):
- GS-3 (Entry): Meets basic requirements; closely supervised, entry-level assignments
- GS-4 (Developmental/Intermediate): One year of specialized NA experience or equivalent education (2 years above high school) and demonstrated KSAs such as therapeutic communication and technical skills
- GS-5 (Full Performance): One year of progressively responsible experience equivalent to GS-4 or a related bachelor’s degree with healthcare coursework; functions with greater independence and may precept new NAs
Required knowledge, skills & abilities (KSAs):
- Ability to provide a range of patient care and support nursing care plans
- Observe and report patients’ physical and emotional status promptly
- Properly use equipment and supplies for basic diagnostic/treatment procedures
- Communicate effectively with patients, families and the clinical team
- Recognize and respond to emergent patient care needs while awaiting assistance
Physical & Work Conditions
- Frequent standing, sitting and walking; regular bending, lifting, stooping and stretching
- Must meet physical lifting/fitness standards as evaluated by Employee Health
- May be required to provide physical restraints for confused or combative patients when necessary
- Work settings can include acute care, outpatient clinics, long-term care, and home/community care environments
- This role is not remote; on-site presence in Palo Alto, CA is required
Compensation & Employment Type

- Salary range (provided): $48,489 - $79,168 per year
