What You’ll Do

This Nursing Assistant role with our confidential client in Northport, NY supports patient care across inpatient, outpatient, home, and Community Living Center (CLC) settings. You will provide daily living assistance, help implement parts of the treatment plan under licensed supervision, and document patient status and care.

  • Provide personal care and activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding).
  • Monitor and document patient condition; report changes promptly to licensed nursing staff.
  • Perform and document routine clinical tasks per standing orders (e.g., blood glucose checks, urine testing, simple dressings).
  • Assist with mobility, transfers, and use of assistive/medical equipment while following proper body mechanics.
  • Participate in therapeutic and group activities; support rehabilitative goals and patient independence.
  • Follow observation levels (one-to-one, continuous observation, 15‑minute checks, hourly rounding) and report safety concerns.
  • Set up and monitor patient-care equipment (oxygen systems, suction, hypothermia devices) and notify clinical staff of malfunctions.
  • Support patient/family orientation to unit routines and contribute to a cooperative interdisciplinary team.
  • Complete required training, annual competency assessments, and precepting/orientation tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The confidential client hires at GS-03 through GS-05 depending on experience and education. Minimum requirements include:

  • United States citizenship (non-citizens may be appointed only in limited circumstances per VA policy).
  • Six months of general related experience OR one year of education above high school with relevant coursework OR completion of an intensive occupation-related training program for NA roles (may meet GS-3 requirement).
  • Ability to acquire the knowledge and skills to perform NA duties safely and effectively.
  • For GS-4: one year of specialized NA or related medical experience OR two years of post‑secondary coursework related to nursing/health care, plus demonstrated KSAs (see below).
  • For GS-5: one year of progressively responsible experience equivalent to GS-4 OR a bachelor’s degree with 24 semester hours of health‑related coursework, plus demonstrated professional KSAs.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to care plan completion.
  • Observation and reporting skills to identify physical and emotional changes and escalate appropriately.
  • Competence with simple diagnostic/treatment equipment (blood glucose monitors, bladder scanners, specimen collection, CPM devices).
  • Clear communication with patients, families, and clinical teams.
  • Ability to assist with emergent situations (recognize need for BLS, control bleeding, support behavioral crisis management until help arrives).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior psychiatric (psych) experience preferred.
  • Experience working in long‑term care, acute, sub‑acute, or hospice settings.
  • Demonstrated experience precepting or assisting with orientation for new nursing assistants.

  • Salary range: $43,432 – $70,912 per year (Confidential Client) — posted for Northport, NY.
  • Employment type: Full time.
  • Actual grade/hire level may be GS-03 through GS-05 depending on qualifications.
