What You’ll Do

This acute-care Nursing Assistant provides direct patient support under the direction of licensed nursing staff in an inpatient/acute setting. Primary responsibilities include:

• Provide hands-on patient care (bathing, feeding, toileting, mobility assistance).
• Assist registered nurses with clinical tasks and execution of the care plan.
• Monitor and report changes in patients’ physical or emotional status to nursing supervisors.
• Use basic diagnostic/treatment equipment (bladder scanner, blood glucose monitor, CPM devices) and assist with specimen collection.
• Participate in patient transfers and safe mobility procedures.
• Communicate effectively with patients, families and the interdisciplinary care team.
• Serve as a preceptor/mentor to new Nursing Assistants when assigned.
• Respond appropriately to emergent situations and provide basic life support until additional help arrives.

Qualifications & Requirements

Minimum and grade-related requirements (candidates may be considered at GS-03 through GS-05 levels based on education/experience):

• United States Citizenship is required (non-citizen appointments only when permitted under applicable policy).
• Experience/Education:
  • Six months of general experience; OR
  • One year of education beyond high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation; OR
  • Completion of an intensive, occupation-related training program of less than one year that prepares you for NA duties.
• English language proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and support completion of nursing care plans.
  • Ability to observe and report physical or emotional status changes promptly.
  • Skill in using basic equipment and supplies for simple diagnostic and treatment procedures.
  • Effective oral communication with patients, families and healthcare staff.
• Preferred:
  • 2 years of acute care experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Grade/level notes:
  • GS-03: Entry level; closely supervised.
  • GS-04: One year of specialized NA experience or equivalent education.
  • GS-05: Full performance level — one year of progressively responsible assignments equivalent to GS-04 or a related bachelor’s degree with healthcare coursework.

• Salary range: $43,637 - $71,247 per year.
• Employment type: Full time.
• Location: Baltimore, MD (on-site, acute care).
• Job grade range: GS-03 to GS-05 (selection dependent on qualifications).
