What You’ll Do

This entry-level Nuclear Engineer role supports radiological controls engineering for naval nuclear programs in Newport News. You will contribute to design, analysis, testing, and radiological monitoring activities that support safe operation and maintenance of nuclear-capable vessels and related facilities.

• Design, develop, and test nuclear equipment, components, and systems used in shipboard and support-facility environments
• Conduct research on materials, radiation transport, contamination detection and mitigation, and related reactor systems
• Perform studies of nuclear fuel-cycle options and recommend safe, cost-effective waste disposal or mitigation approaches
• Develop and apply radiation transport models, statistical analyses, and performance metrics to support engineering decisions
• Recommend technology and process improvements to enhance safety, performance, efficiency, or cost-effectiveness
• Support Reactor Servicing, Overhaul Maintenance for aircraft carriers, and Fleet Support / Facilities / Special Emphasis Projects as required
• Prepare technical reports, procedures, and documentation; support training and emergency planning activities

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering or closely related degree from an ABET-accredited undergraduate program
• 0 years of relevant experience required (entry-level)
• Proficient with standard desktop software (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation tools)
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance
• U.S. citizenship is required for this role

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with the U.S. Navy nuclear propulsion program (submarines or aircraft carriers)
• Experience in commercial nuclear power plant operations or radiological controls engineering
• Familiarity with radiation health & safety standards, contamination control, and shipboard industrial environments

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Compensation & Benefits

The posted anticipated salary range for this position is $61,261.00 – $74,388.60 per year. This range is a good-faith estimate based on the role’s location and responsibilities; final offers consider experience, education, and other factors.
