What You’ll Do

Confidential Client is hiring an entry-level Network Engineer to join a federal/research network engineering team supporting large-scale research and education networks. You’ll work with technical staff, management, and customers to deploy, operate, and troubleshoot WANs, data center links, firewalls, and remote-access VPNs across national-scope IP/MPLS backbones.

  • Implements customer migrations and new deployments while following change-control procedures to reduce customer impact and downtime
  • Responds to network incidents, troubleshoots connectivity problems, answers trouble tickets, and participates in a rotating on-call schedule
  • Creates and maintains accurate network documentation and entries in the network-management database
  • Works across teams (Engineering, Service Desk, Systems/Software, Project Management) and with customer organizations using Slack, Zoom/Meet/Teams
  • Performs basic network analysis and implements improvements to ensure performance and reliability
  • Assists project teams with design, evaluation, development, and deployment of network hardware and software
  • Manages and configures equipment from vendors such as Juniper, Cisco, and Ciena

Qualifications

Education & experience

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree (preferably Computer Science or related field). Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Preferred: Some prior experience in network engineering or related technical roles.

Required skills

  • Proficient written and verbal communication
  • Professional demeanor and strong time-management / priority-setting skills
  • High commitment to quality and attention to detail
  • Flexibility to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and willingness to learn

Preferred skills

  • Experience configuring network devices and policies on Cisco and Juniper platforms
  • Familiarity with automation tools (Ansible) and version control (Git)
  • Scripting in Perl or Python
  • Experience with trouble-ticketing systems and installing networking equipment
  • Knowledge of AC/DC power, and running fiber/copper connections

Working Conditions & Location

  • This role involves primarily sedentary work with periods of moving around office and campus environments. The position requires effective communication and the ability to operate standard office equipment; reasonable accommodations will be considered.
  • Occasional travel to customer sites across the US to install, test, and turn up WAN connections may be required.
  • Work arrangement: eligible for a hybrid schedule from the Clear Creek, IN campus; under the right circumstances, fully remote engineering roles may be supported.
