Mission Software Engineer - Undersea Reconnaissance & Strike
The Mission Software Engineer at Confidential Client is responsible for diagnosing and fixing complex bugs in autonomous underwater and surface vehicle software systems. This role involves reproducing field-reported anomalies, analyzing system metrics and logs, and delivering robust fixes across multiple programming languages and subsystems. The position requires strong debugging instincts, systems fluency, and collaboration with hardware teams, with significant travel to support deployed vehicles.
About Careertakes
👉 Important disclosure: Careertakes is a third-party recruiting platform supporting this hiring process. If selected, you will be employed directly by our client, Defense and Space Manufacturing.
Applicants for this role may also receive access to additional matched opportunities through the Careertakes platform.
What You’ll Do
You will join a field-focused software team responsible for diagnosing and fixing issues discovered on deployed maritime vehicles and their support systems. Day-to-day you will reproduce field-reported anomalies, use observability data to reconstruct system state, validate fixes in simulation or hardware-in-the-loop, and ship robust code changes through normal CI/CD. This is a hands-on role that moves quickly from bug discovery to a verified release.
- Take a field-reported anomaly (sensor stopped publishing, mission faulted, data drift) and determine the subsystem that actually failed.
- Reproduce problems for real: replay recorded data, use visualization tools, and verify behavior offline.
- Use per-service metrics, dashboards, and centralized logs to reconstruct system state at failure time.
- Validate fixes in simulated environments and hardware-in-the-loop where required before any vehicle deployment.
- Implement fixes in the language the subsystem uses (Rust, modern C++, Python, Go, etc.) with tests and CI.
- Distinguish between bugs, config errors, and deployment mismatches — fix the issue at the correct layer.
- Document root cause and remediation for every incident and help build triage/on-call runbooks.
- Collaborate with owning teams and push for subsystem-level fixes when needed instead of temporary workarounds.
What You Need To Already Have
We’re looking for people with strong systems-debugging instincts and experience operating under time pressure with incomplete information.
- Real experience debugging code you didn’t write under time pressure.
- Comfort reading and fixing code in at least two of: Rust, modern C++, Python, Go.
- Strong systems-debugging approach: logs, metrics, replaying recorded data, reproducing issues offline.
- Familiarity with observability tooling (Prometheus/Grafana-class metrics, Loki/ELK-class logs).
- Linux and systems fluency; bonus for experience with declarative/immutable OS setups (Nix-style).
- Clear, concise written incident reports that identify root cause and remediation.
- Willingness to work close to hardware and sensors; prior maritime/robotics domain experience is not required.
- Willingness to travel 25%+ on average.
Nice To Have (Not Required)
- Experience with robotics middleware, sensor drivers, or real-time data pipelines (sonar, radar, lidar).
- Simulation-in-the-loop or hardware-in-the-loop test experience.
- CI/CD and versioned deployment experience for embedded or fleet software.
- On-call or field-support experience for hardware shipped to real users.
Where This Role Can Lead
This is an entry point that accelerates cross-subsystem fluency. Engineers who excel here often move into subsystem ownership and roadmap leadership because they understand failure modes across the stack.
