Role overview

Confidential Client is seeking a Mental Health Counselor (32 hrs/week) supporting Adult Psychiatry services in Boston, MA. This clinical role is part of a multidisciplinary treatment team and focuses on providing behavioral evaluation, therapeutic support, and patient-centered care under the supervision of licensed nursing staff.


Schedule & location

  • 32 hours per week with a rotating schedule that may include days, evenings, weekends, and some nights.
  • Work location: Boston, MA (on-site).

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology, or a related human services field.
  • At least 1 year of direct patient care experience.

Key responsibilities

  • Read patient progress notes and test results at the start of each shift to assess status.
  • Implement and review treatment plans and behavior management plans to help patients meet goals.
  • Communicate observations and relevant changes in patient behavior or safety to the charge RN and treatment team.
  • Document patient activities, behaviors, and mental status each shift in alignment with treatment goals.
  • Conduct individual contacts with patients to review needs and daily schedules.
  • Provide patient and family education about milieu programming, hospitalization goals, and therapeutic interventions.
  • Lead or co-lead therapeutic and activity groups; encourage patient participation.
  • Participate in crisis intervention and de-escalation per CPI technique and facility policies.
  • Assist with admissions tasks (search for contraband, vitals, orientation) and support discharge planning.
  • Serve as a role model for other mental health counselors, provide peer feedback, and assist in orienting new staff.

Physical requirements

  • Prolonged standing and walking; frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.
  • Lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring patients and equipment.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, bodily substances, and infectious agents.
  • Ability to respond to unpredictable situations and irregular hours.

Skills & abilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Ability to gather age-appropriate clinical data and apply it to treatment needs.
  • Effective, assertive communication and teamwork with clinical colleagues and nursing staff.
  • Competence in crisis management and professional problem-solving.
  • Experience facilitating therapeutic groups and using clinical documentation tools.

Compensation & benefits

  • Pay Range: $20.12 - $25.15 per hour (based on full-time equivalent).
