The Medical Supply Technician in Sterile Processing is responsible for decontaminating, sterilizing, inspecting, and assembling reusable medical equipment and surgical instrument sets for use in clinical and operating room settings. This role involves operating various sterilization equipment, preparing operating room case carts, and adhering to strict safety and sterility protocols to support patient care within the Confidential Client. What You’ll Do
This is a sterile processing role (Medical Supply Technician / MST) supporting clinical services at a Confidential Client facility in Cincinnati, OH. You will perform duties across decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and case cart preparation under supervision at developmental and full-performance levels depending on hire grade (GS-3 to GS-6).
- Perform decontamination: disassemble, clean and remove soil, blood and tissue using ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers and approved chemical agents.
- Inspect instruments and packages for cleanliness, function and proper sterilization indicators.
- Assemble basic and specialty instrument sets, trays, and operating room case carts using surgery schedules.
- Operate and monitor sterilization and reprocessing equipment (steam, Sterrad, Steris, ETO, high-level scope reprocessors).
- Complete and document daily operational and quality control checks for sterilizers and reprocessing equipment.
- Follow universal precautions, infection prevention and sterility principles in all tasks.
- Receive on-the-job training and work under frequent direct supervision at developmental levels; perform independently at full-performance level.
Who We’re Looking For (Minimum Qualifications)
Candidates must meet the basic requirements for entry-level sterile processing work. Accepted combinations include experience, education, or both as described below:
- United States citizenship (per applicable federal policy).
- English language proficiency sufficient to communicate orally and in writing.
- Experience: Minimum six months demonstrating ability to perform this work — e.g., MST, OR or surgical technician experience in sterile processing.
- OR Education: One year beyond high school with at least 6 semester hours in health care–related courses (sterile processing, nursing assistant, surgical tech, etc.).
- OR Combination of education and experience that demonstrates required competencies.
- Grade-level distinctions:
- GS-03 (Entry): Meets basic experience or education requirements.
- GS-04 (Developmental): Six months as MST/OR/surgical technician OR two years post-high-school with at least 12 semester hours in related courses.
- GS-05 (Developmental): One year of experience equivalent to next lower grade level or bachelor's with relevant coursework.
- GS-06 (Full Performance): One year equivalent experience at the next lower grade demonstrating full proficiency.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Knowledge of universal precautions and infection prevention to prevent cross-contamination.
- Basic medical terminology applicable to assembling specialty OR/clinic instrument sets.
- Familiarity with sterilization and cleaning equipment and sterilization methods (steam, Sterrad, Steris, ETO, scope reprocessors).
- Ability to read/interprete written procedures and follow manufacturer instructions for instrument reprocessing.
- Manual dexterity, visual acuity and attention to detail for instrument inspection and assembly.
- Ability to communicate effectively with clinical staff and supervisors.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Frequent standing and walking throughout the shift.
- Regular bending and lifting of packages; occasional lifts up to ~50 lbs.
- Tasks require manual dexterity and good near-vision for instrument handling and inspection.
- Work is performed in decontamination and sterile processing areas and requires strict adherence to PPE and safety procedures.
Compensation & Employment Details
- Employment Type: Full time
- Pay Range (provided by client): $40,177 – $73,121 per year
- Hiring grade range: GS-3 to GS-6 (actual grade depends on qualifications and selection)
- Location: Cincinnati, OH (on-site)
