What You’ll Do

As a Sterile Processing / Medical Supply Technician you will perform decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable medical equipment and instrument sets used across clinical areas. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Decontaminate, clean, and inspect reusable medical equipment (RME) and surgical instruments.
  • Assemble instrument sets, trays, and operating room case carts per surgical schedules and departmental procedures.
  • Operate and monitor sterilizers and high‑level disinfectors (e.g., steam, Sterrad, Steris, ETO) and adhere to sterilization validation and documentation practices.
  • Inspect packaging and instruments for proper sterilization and readiness for clinical use.
  • Maintain accurate inventory, logs, and sterilization records; follow chain‑of‑custody procedures.
  • Follow universal precautions and infection‑prevention protocols to prevent cross‑contamination.
  • Communicate with clinical teams and document issues clearly in written and verbal formats.
  • Follow departmental policies for event‑related packaging, storage, and handling to preserve sterility.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, candidates must meet the basic requirements below (Confidential Client follows applicable federal and state hiring rules):

  • United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when permitted under applicable policies).
  • Six months of experience or equivalent education demonstrating ability to perform sterile processing tasks OR
  • One year post‑high‑school with at least 6 semester hours in relevant health care courses (examples: sterile processing, nursing assistant, OR/surgical technician) OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience qualifying for entry level.

Grade‑level qualification guidance (examples of qualifying experience/education):

  • GS‑03 / Entry: Meets the basic requirements.
  • GS‑04: Six months experience in sterile processing, OR two years of education above high school with at least 12 semester hours in related coursework.
  • GS‑05: One year of experience at the next lower grade (e.g., performing segments of decontamination, assembly, sterilizer operation, and case cart prep) OR a bachelor’s degree meeting course requirements.
  • GS‑06 (Full Performance): One year of specialized experience at GS‑05 level (examples include preparing and operating sterilizers, inspecting and assembling OR sets, and preparing case carts per surgical schedules).

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

  • Knowledge of universal precautions, infection control, and sterility principles.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, microbiology, and surgical instruments.
  • Ability to read and follow written procedures and work directions precisely.
  • Strong attention to detail for inspection and documentation tasks.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies safely; comfortable with physical, hands‑on work.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

The role has physical demands typical of sterile processing positions. Examples include:
