Medical Laboratory Technician
The Medical Laboratory Technician performs moderate to high complexity clinical laboratory tests under general supervision, ensuring accurate specimen handling, test execution, and result interpretation in compliance with regulatory standards. What You’ll Do
Under general supervision from the Technical Supervisor, you will provide ancillary support for clinical activities in the Chemistry laboratory by performing, interpreting, and documenting moderate- and high-complexity clinical laboratory tests (CLIA '88). Key responsibilities include:
- After training, perform and interpret moderate and high-complexity tests.
- Prioritize STAT and routine samples to meet turnaround expectations.
- Ensure accurate specimen identification, labeling, storage, and processing.
- Accession specimens and transcribe results accurately into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Perform instrument/equipment maintenance, routine QC, and assess QC data.
- Identify instrument or methodology issues and escalate with documentation.
- Investigate and resolve discrepant or problematic patient results; document actions taken.
- Notify appropriate staff of Critical Alert Values and required callbacks; document per policy.
- Maintain competency records, participate in continuing education, and support peer training.
- Participate in quality improvement activities and section or hospital committees as available.
- Support education of students, residents, and new staff through didactic and benchside teaching.
- Follow hospital infection control and safety procedures; report incidents or hazards.
- Maintain neat, well-stocked work areas and communicate inventory needs to supervisors.
Qualifications
Education, certification, experience and skills required for success in this role:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, applied science, or a combination of education (e.g., bachelor’s + associate’s in MLT/MLS) that meets CAP scientific requirements.
- Certification (preferred):
- ASCP, NCA, AMT, AAB, or equivalent certification preferred.
- Experience:
- Entry‑level — appropriate internship/clinical laboratory training required.
- Knowledge & skills:
- Familiarity with CLIA '88 definitions for moderate and high complexity testing.
- Ability to perform venipuncture/venipuncture techniques.
- Competency using LIS, performing QC, interpreting results, and calibrating instruments.
- Strong attention to detail, documentation skills, and ability to communicate with clinical staff.
- Ability to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies (JC, CAP, FDA, AABB).
Schedule & Location
- Location: South Boston, MA (on-site)
- Schedule: Full time — 40 hours/week; days with rotating weekends and holidays.
Compensation & Benefits
- Compensation range: $26.78 - $35.34 per hour (range based on minimum qualifications; final pay considers education, experience, and certifications).
