Position Overview
Confidential Client (Scientific & QA) is hiring a full-time Medical Lab Scientist I (Microbiology) for evening shifts in South Boston, MA. This is an entry-level MLS I role appropriate for new graduates or technologists not yet certified. The position performs clinical microbiology testing, documents results in the LIS, and supports quality and proficiency activities under supervision.
What You’ll Do
- Prepare and process microbiology specimens and perform bacteriological, microscopic, and related tests following established laboratory procedures.
- Use automated instrumentation and manual methods; run QC, calibrations, preventative maintenance and basic troubleshooting.
- Evaluate QC and calibration results and ensure acceptability before reporting patient results.
- Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and report critical/urgent results to providers per lab policy.
- Participate in competency assessments, proficiency testing, QA/QI projects, and continuing education.
- Assist with inventory management to maintain supplies for patient testing.
- Review own work for accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with laboratory standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a Biological Science or related field required.
- Must meet CLIA requirements to perform high-complexity testing; college transcripts may be requested.
- Experience is not required but preferred (clinical practicum or rotation in clinical laboratory medicine is a plus).
- ASCP certification (generalist or categorical technologist) or equivalent accreditation is preferred within 2 years of hire; upon certification, promotion to MLS II may be available.
- Proficiency with computers, web-based applications, and Microsoft Office required.

- Ability to identify routine process-improvement opportunities and participate in QA activities.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Light work: frequently exert up to 20 pounds of force; periods of standing and walking across the hospital/campus may be required.
- Work is performed in a clinical laboratory environment with exposure to biological specimens and standard lab safety controls.
Compensation
- Pay range: $37.00 - $49.80 per hour. This is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably expects to pay at this time. Actual compensation will depend on factors such as experience, education, certifications, shift differentials, and applicable law. Additional pay (call, premium, overtime) may apply per policy and law.
