What You’ll Do

This entry-level professional role reviews and decides on disability claims under Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and/or Medically Needy programs. You will receive in-depth training and work with multiple computer screens and an electronic case management system.

  • Research, compile, analyze, and render independent decisions on disability claims.
  • Evaluate medical and vocational records for evidentiary sufficiency.
  • Conduct telephone fact-finding and written correspondence to obtain necessary documentation.
  • Authorize specialized medical or psychological diagnostic services when appropriate.
  • Enter and maintain accurate case notes and transactional inputs from case opening through closure.
  • Apply rules, regulations, and policies to determine initial or continued eligibility.
  • Identify errors or issues and take corrective action; escalate as needed.
  • Collaborate with team members and leadership; support public-facing communications when required.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collect, evaluate and analyze data related to disability benefits.
  • Competency applying rules, regulations, and agency policy.
  • Detail orientation, critical thinking, and basic math aptitude.
  • Ability to organize information logically and maintain accurate records.
  • Able to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Comfort with Windows-based systems and typed case documentation.
  • Ability to conduct fact-finding research and utilize problem-solving techniques.

Qualifications

Preference given to candidates who meet one of the following or an equivalent combination of education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field; OR
  • Associate’s degree plus two years’ relevant work experience; OR
  • High school diploma plus four years’ relevant work experience.

Relevant experience includes handling caseloads for insurance, disability, vocational, social work or government programs; determining eligibility based on rules and regulations; or work in medical or vocational settings.


Location & Work Environment

  • Location: Tallahassee, FL (Leon County) — on-site work required.
  • Typical schedule: Full-time, standard business hours. After successful completion of the trainee program (12 months), eligible employees may request flexible schedules and possible telework per agency policy.
  • Occasional overtime may be offered. Incumbents may be required to perform emergency duty outside normal hours.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $41,739.88 — $78,418.23 per year.
