Responsibilities

Confidential Client is seeking an entry-level Mechanical Engineer to support engineer-to-order (ETO) products and product life-cycle activities for manufacturing equipment used in food and sanitary processing environments. Working under guidance from senior engineers and the Engineering Manager, you will deliver designs, support production and field service, and drive continuous improvement.

  • Review customer requirements; identify standard vs. engineered scope and clarify open questions early.
  • Configure, design, and modify equipment to order; create and release accurate drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and specs on schedule.
  • Verify order packages for correctness (part, revision, configuration) before release.
  • Support manufacturing and assembly during builds and feed lessons learned back into standard designs.
  • Produce clean 3D CAD models and detailed drawings (GD&T, tolerances, stack-ups).
  • Apply design-for-manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, and hygienic/washdown principles.
  • Prepare and manage engineering changes: assess impact, obtain approvals, release, and verify implementation.
  • Maintain configuration and revision control in CAD/PDM and ERP systems; keep as-built and as-fielded records current.
  • Investigate production and field issues, use structured root-cause methods (5 Whys, 8D, fishbone), and implement verified corrective actions.
  • Perform engineering calculations, tolerance analysis, and basic FEA; plan and run bench/shop/field tests and document results.
  • Identify and implement reliability and manufacturability improvements; improve engineering processes (templates, checklists, standard work).
  • Plan, prioritize, and communicate status and schedule risk; participate in design reviews and team problem solving.

Core Behaviors

How the work gets done matters as much as technical skill. You will be evaluated on:

  • Planning & organization: break work into steps, set realistic dates, and maintain version control.
  • Execution: self-directed, owns outcomes end-to-end, shares knowledge, and asks for help early.
  • Thoroughness & quality: check work for units, assumptions, revisions, and accuracy before release.
  • Responsiveness: set expectations, communicate proactively, and balance urgent issues with planned work.
  • Tenacity: persist through hard problems and organizational friction to closure.
  • Professionalism: communicate clearly, document rationale, and act with integrity and safety-first mindset.
  • Pragmatism & focus: treat cost, schedule, and manufacturability as constraints; favor simple solutions.
  • Curiosity & learning: learn quickly from the shop floor and field; use low-cost tests to validate ideas.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related engineering field from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Entry level — new graduate or up to 2 years’ experience. Internships, co-ops, capstone projects, and student design teams count.
  • Working knowledge of statics, mechanics of materials, materials selection, and engineering drawings including GD&T basics.
  • Experience with a 3D CAD package (SolidWorks preferred) via coursework, internships, or projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and deliver work on time individually and in teams.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Internship or co-op experience in manufacturing, machine design, or product support.
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude (machining, welding, sheet metal, assembly, equipment repair).
  • Exposure to PDM, BOMs, and ERP systems; SolidWorks certification (e.g., CSWA).
  • Familiarity with FEA, tolerance stack-ups, structured problem solving (5 Whys, 8D, DFMEA), or SPC.
  • Knowledge of food/sanitary/washdown equipment, basic pneumatics, electrical, or controls.
  • Exposure to Lean or continuous improvement methods.

Measures of Success

  • Order packages (drawings, BOMs, specs) released complete, accurate, and on time with minimal rework.
  • Engineering changes processed with full impact assessment, approval, release, and verified implementation.
  • Issues closed with verified root causes and corrective actions; fewer repeat failures.
  • Timely, clear communication with internal customers; commitments met or renegotiated early.
  • Steady growth in technical skill, independence, and scope.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent sitting, use of hands/fingers, talking and hearing; regular standing, walking, and reaching.
  • Occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to work extended periods at a workstation; occasional extended standing, bending, kneeling.
  • Reasonable accommodations will be considered to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Working Conditions & Hiring Conditions

  • Role operates in both office and manufacturing warehouse environments; routinely uses standard office equipment, hand tools, and material handling equipment.
  • Travel up to 10% as needed.
