Role Overview

Confidential Client is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to provide mechanical and systems engineering support for a major naval acquisition program. This in-person role, based in Elkins Park, PA, will work closely with the Ship Design Manager and shipyard teams to review and develop ship specifications, evaluate production deliverables, and support machinery systems across the acquisition lifecycle.


What You’ll Do

  • Deliver mechanical and systems engineering support for ship machinery and propulsion systems.
  • Review construction and equipment drawings, schematics, and design reports.
  • Draft contract specification redlines and provide technical rationales for contract modifications.
  • Review production contract deliverables in an Integrated Data Environment (IDE) and coordinate comment workflows.
  • Coordinate machinery design team efforts across mechanical and electrical subsystems (e.g., gas turbines, transmissions, lift fans, propellers, electrical distribution).
  • Observe and document test events at vendor, shipyard, or field locations.
  • Identify technical risks; prepare risk assessments and reliability analyses; perform root-cause investigations.
  • Act as a technical liaison between shipyards, SMEs, and program leadership; communicate findings and recommendations clearly in written and verbal formats.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Systems Engineering, or closely related ABET-accredited discipline.
  • Open to entry-level (recent grads) up through journeyman-level engineers (approximately 3–7+ years relevant experience).
  • Strong fundamentals: fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, rotating machinery (gas turbines, gearboxes/transmissions), and propulsion systems.
  • Proficient at reading and interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
  • Experience analyzing reliability data and performing risk/root-cause analysis.
  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills; proficient with MS Office and common engineering data environments (IDE, technical databases).
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain an active DoD Secret Clearance.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to shipyards, test sites, and vendor facilities as required.

Nice-to-Have / Differentiators

  • Direct experience with naval vessel machinery, shipbuilding contract deliverables, or ship systems engineering processes.
  • Familiarity with Requests for Waiver/Deviation (RWD) workflows and producing formal contract deliverable responses.
  • Prior work in integrated data environments (IDE) or similar PLM/engineering data systems.

Location & Work Type

  • In-person position supporting Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia Division (NSWCPD) programs and shipyard interfaces.
  • Based in Elkins Park, PA. Local travel to vendor and shipyard sites will be required.
