What You’ll Do

This entry-level Mechanical Engineer will support on-site power plant engineering tasks to improve reliability, safety, and performance. Working under supervision, you will perform hands-on engineering assignments, support maintenance projects, and assist senior engineers on larger initiatives.

  • Develop technical sections of contracts and specifications for new or retrofit equipment.
  • Prepare and review technical drawings and evaluate vendor bids.
  • Assist maintenance engineering with studies, data collection, and performance analysis.
  • Collect and help evaluate vibration and diagnostic data using dedicated tools and software.
  • Support inspections and minor repairs during unit outages; coordinate and oversee contractors on smaller projects.
  • Apply standard engineering practices to troubleshoot equipment and recommend economically viable solutions.
  • Contribute to system design, equipment selection, construction oversight, and project coordination as required.
  • Build effective working relationships with operations, maintenance, and corporate staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an EAC/ABET-accredited program.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Entry-level experience or internships in mechanical or power-plant environments preferred.

Physical & Environmental Demands

  • Frequent sitting; regular lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working at heights (up to ~600 ft) while using required safety equipment (e.g., harness per ANSI Z359).
  • May work in confined spaces and be exposed to heat/cold, dust, fumes, chemicals, vibration, and noise.
  • Must be respirator qualified when required.
  • Use of tools and equipment such as scaffolding, vibration testers, ultrasonic testers, thickness gauges, surveying tools, and computers.

Key Skills & Tools

  • Technical knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with vibration data collection and diagnostic techniques.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze data/reports, conduct research, coordinate projects, and present findings.
  • Comfortable following detailed procedures and working under supervision to develop professional engineering competence.

Location

This position is on-site at Leland Olds Station in Beulah, ND. Applicants must be able to work at the facility and travel to plant sites as required.
