What You’ll Do

This contract role supports the development and commercialization of optical tooling and mold inserts used in high-quality lens production. You'll lead design and project activities across engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to translate lens design intent into robust plastic and insert tooling that meets specifications.

  • Lead and execute optical tooling and mold insert design activities to meet lens performance and manufacturing requirements.
  • Translate lens designs into manufacturable plastic and insert designs using CAD and company tooling systems.
  • Convert pilot-line insert designs to commercial injection molding machine (IMM) platforms for NPI across GNPP stages.
  • Create and implement tooling calibration strategies to identify and minimize variation; prepare calibration reports for OQ and PQ.
  • Develop project plans, timelines, and milestones; track and communicate progress across cross-functional teams.
  • Provide technical direction to ensure tooling designs are manufacturable and align with quality and process requirements.
  • Diagnose and resolve design, process, and cross-functional issues using analytical problem-solving.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple concurrent tasks in a matrixed environment.

What We’re Looking For

Essential skills and qualifications for success in this role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years project experience; proven track record delivering projects from initiation through delivery.
  • At least 1 year experience with 2D/3D mechanical design and tolerancing.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Pro-E (Creo), Unigraphics (NX), or AutoCAD.
  • Experience or familiarity with tooling design, mold insert design, and mechanical fixture design.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to facilitate issue resolution across cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities (sub-team or project leadership preferred).
  • Strong communication skills to clearly convey technical concepts and status to stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in optical tooling, injection molding processes, or lens manufacturing environments.
  • Experience developing and executing calibration strategies and documenting results in formal reports.
  • Comfort with structured project methodologies and phase-gate NPI processes (e.g., GNPP).
  • Interest in continuous improvement of tooling design, calibration approaches, and cross-functional collaboration.
