Position overview

Confidential Client (Logistics & Warehouse) is hiring a Manager Trainee in Syracuse, NY. This entry-level management role is a hands-on training position to learn driver and fleet management, DOT compliance, load assignment, routing, and customer-facing operational activities. The role requires flexibility across shifts (including nights/weekends), regional travel, and a willingness to relocate depending on account assignment.


What You’ll Do

  • Learn to manage a small driver roster and/or non-traditional shifts, ensuring safe, on-time freight movement.
  • Train on DOT and company compliance, including driver safety programs and documentation.
  • Assign loads, plan routes, monitor freight movement and manage exceptions to meet customer requirements.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with drivers and outside carriers; support new carrier setup and retention.
  • Provide hands-on personnel management support — driver orientation, training, counseling and performance follow-up.
  • Support yard operations: inspect equipment, coordinate maintenance, and help prioritize repairs.
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as payroll support, invoicing, P&L review assistance, and operational reporting.
  • Fill in for absent personnel and support projects that optimize fleet efficiency and profitability.
  • Work with customers and internal teams to resolve service, routing, mechanical, or pay-related issues — including on-call as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Transportation/Logistics, Supply Chain or related field OR High School Diploma/GED plus 1 year of relevant experience (management, transportation/logistics, business administration, account management), or equivalent military experience.
  • Willingness to travel to account, customer, and company locations as needed.
  • Ability to work multiple shifts, including nights and weekends when required.
  • Willingness to regionally relocate depending on account assignment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience managing a team.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with drivers, vendors, and clients.
  • Comfortable analyzing basic financial/operational reports and contributing to continuous improvement recommendations.
  • Strong communication skills across multiple mediums and a flexible approach to changing conditions.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Expected starting pay range: $46,100 — $57,600 per year. Factors that may affect starting pay include skills, education, experience, geography, and other qualifications.
  • May be eligible for annual bonuses and incentives based on profitability or volumes per company plans.
  • Typical full-time benefits may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k), life insurance, short- and long-term disability, paid time off (accrual based on tenure), parental leave, and paid holidays — subject to applicable eligibility and plan terms.
