What You’ll Do

This Manager Trainee role in Lansing, MI is an entry-level management position in logistics and supply chain operations. You will be trained to support small-driver-count operations and non-traditional shifts (including nights and weekends) with a focus on safe, on-time freight movement and excellent customer service. Key activities include:

  • Learn to assign loads, plan routes, and monitor freight movement to meet customer requirements and driver ETAs.
  • Support DOT compliance and driver safety programs; learn to enforce company policies and safety procedures.
  • Build professional relationships with drivers, outside carriers, customers, and internal teams to enable smooth operations.
  • Assist with dispatching, driver counseling, incident/accident review, and resolution of operational exceptions.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and travel to customer or account locations when required.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to manage day-to-day fleet operations, including load assignment, routing, and freight exception handling.
  • Support inventory, asset, and equipment balancing across account pools and driver assignments.
  • Assist with administrative tasks: payroll coordination, invoicing, P&L analysis, and operational reporting.
  • Help maintain yard operations (inspections, basic repairs, coordinating maintenance) to ensure safe equipment.
  • Support onboarding, orientation, and training of drivers and other personnel, including use of internal and third-party systems.
  • Measure and report on key performance indicators; recommend process improvements to increase efficiency and profitability.

Qualifications

Minimum

  • High school diploma / GED (required). Currently enrolled or recently enrolled in a degree program (up to 2 years) OR Bachelor’s degree; able to work nights/weekends and travel as needed.
  • Willingness to learn DOT regulations, safety protocols, and operational systems.
  • This position is not eligible for employment-based sponsorship.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred) with internship or relevant logistics/transportation experience.
  • Prior exposure to fleet operations, dispatch, or supply chain functions.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to build and maintain professional relationships.
  • Good problem-solving and judgment skills; ability to analyze situations and make productive decisions.
  • Ability to adapt to changing environments and multi-shift operations.
  • Basic financial literacy: able to assist with P&L review, budgeting, and performance reporting.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple administrative tasks accurately.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay range: $46,100–$61,100 (starting). Actual starting pay may vary based on skills, education, experience, geography, and other qualifications.
  • May be eligible for annual bonus/incentives per company policy.
  • Benefits for eligible full-time employees may include: medical, dental, vision, 401(k), life insurance, short- and long-term disability, paid time off (vacation & sick), six weeks paid maternity leave plus two weeks paid parental leave, and six paid holidays annually.
