Position Overview

Confidential Client seeks a Library Specialist I to deliver frontline customer service and entry-level specialized support at a public branch in Houston, TX. This full-time role supports circulation, patron accounts, basic reference and readers’ advisory, digital resources and lab/technology assistance, programming for all ages, collection maintenance, outreach, and general branch operations. This position requires strong customer-service skills, basic technology proficiency, and a commitment to creating a welcoming, inclusive environment.


What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)

  • Provide friendly, inclusive customer service in person, by phone, and through approved electronic channels.
  • Register patrons for library cards and maintain accurate patron account records.
  • Perform circulation tasks: check-in/check-out, holds, renewals, fines/payments (when assigned).
  • Protect patron confidentiality in accordance with law and policy.
  • Offer readers’ advisory and basic reference/research assistance using catalogs, databases, and trusted online sources.
  • Assist patrons with public computers, printers, scanners, copiers, e-books, databases, mobile devices, and approved makerspace/lab equipment.
  • Deliver and promote assigned educational, cultural, literacy, and enrichment programs for children, teens, adults, older adults, and families.
  • Process, sort, shelve, and maintain library materials; support displays, inventory, weeding, and collection projects.
  • Support outreach efforts and maintain cooperative relationships with community partners and schools.
  • Assist with opening/closing procedures, room and equipment readiness, signage, and operational checklists.
  • Record program attendance and service metrics; prepare basic reports as requested.
  • Observe and report safety, security, accessibility, maintenance, or facility concerns.
  • Perform other related circulation, programming, collection, technology-support, outreach, and operational duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience (choose one of the options below)

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university AND 1 year of experience planning, delivering, or supporting programs or activities for community groups of any age PLUS 1 year of direct customer-service experience. OR
  • Associate degree (or 60 college credits) AND 3 years of relevant programming experience AND 1 year of direct customer-service experience. OR
  • High school diploma or GED AND 5 years of relevant programming experience AND 1 year of direct customer-service experience.

Additional requirements

  • Available and reliable transportation for work-related duties.
  • Unofficial transcripts required with application.
  • Must use a personal mobile device for multifactor authentication.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Office 365.
  • Comfortable using social media for basic promotion (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment.
  • Patience and skill working with the public and staff of all ages.
  • Initiative, discretion, and adherence to confidentiality standards.

Preferences (Nice to Have)

  • Experience in a public, school, or academic library, government agency, nonprofit, or similar public-service setting.
  • Experience using an integrated library system for circulation and materials processing.
  • Experience delivering programming, outreach, digital-literacy support, or working with makerspace equipment.
  • Bilingual skills (preferred).

Compensation & Schedule

  • Compensation: $20.00 per hour.
  • Employment type: Full-time (40 hours/week); paid biweekly.
  • Typical schedule: Monday through Saturday, may include evenings and weekends; occasional travel to other branches or off-site events.
  • Work primarily performed in a public library environment with frequent public interaction and periods of computer use.
  • Employment contingent upon passing a background check.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and occasional lifting (typically up to 25 lbs; occasionally up to 40 lbs).
  • Regular use of computers, office equipment, and software.
  • Some assignments may occur outdoors or require travel to community events.
