Role Overview

We are working with a confidential client seeking a hands-on Lead Software Engineer to design, develop, and deliver scalable, secure applications. This is a contract opportunity based in Rockville, MD. You will drive architecture and technical decisions, lead complex initiatives, and mentor other engineers across the software development lifecycle.

What You’ll Do

• Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs.
• Lead technical initiatives and participate in architecture and system-design discussions.
• Develop solutions that meet standards for reliability, security, scalability, and performance.
• Provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and promote strong engineering practices.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
• Identify system and process gaps and recommend improvements.
• Troubleshoot complex issues across development, staging, and production environments.
• Improve development processes, CI/CD pipelines, and testing practices.
• Communicate technical priorities, risks, and progress to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Required Technical Skills

• Strong Java development experience and solid object-oriented design skills.
• Spring Boot and REST API development.
• Experience with PostgreSQL and NoSQL solutions (DynamoDB).
• Strong AWS experience (EC2, RDS, S3, Lambda, API Gateway, VPC, Security Groups, SQS/SNS, CloudFront, Route 53).
• Containerization with Docker and familiarity with orchestration patterns.
• Front-end experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and frameworks such as React or Angular.
• HTML, CSS, and responsive UI tooling (e.g., Bootstrap).
• CI/CD pipeline experience and DevOps best practices.
• Automated/unit testing and software security best practices.
• Performance tuning and application optimization experience.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related technical discipline — or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum ~7 years of relevant software engineering experience.
• Proven track record in system design, distributed architectures, and cloud-native applications.
• Strong fundamentals in algorithms, data structures, and complexity analysis.
• Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and guiding technical decisions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
