Position overview

Confidential Client is hiring an entry-level Land Surveyor I to join a highways and intermodal project implementation team in Ottawa, IL. This role supports survey crews by collecting accurate field measurements and operating/reading surveying instruments used for route, bridge, hydraulic, and property surveys.

  • Location: Ottawa, IL (work address: 700 E Norris Dr, Ottawa, IL 61350)
  • Employment type: Full-time
  • Work hours: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday–Friday
  • Hybrid schedule: Anticipated availability from 1 to 5 days per week in office depending on operational needs
  • Union: This is a union position; provisions of the applicable collective bargaining agreement apply

Key responsibilities

  • Ensure accurate collection and recording of survey data using standard surveying instruments.
  • Operate and read total stations, levels, GPS equipment, and other crew instruments.
  • Perform calculations from instrument readings and present results in meaningful formats for design and construction teams.
  • Follow departmental safety procedures and maintain a professional, equitable work environment.
  • Assist survey crew with route, bridge, hydraulic, and property survey tasks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Current registration as a licensed Professional Land Surveyor in Illinois; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in land surveying from an accredited college/university PLUS successful completion of the Fundamentals of Surveying (FE/FS) exam or possession of a Surveyor Intern license; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related science with at least 24 semester hours of land surveying coursework PLUS successful completion of the Fundamentals of Surveying exam or possession of a Surveyor Intern license.

Preferred qualifications

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Good problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience or familiarity with highway construction, design, or surveying practices.
  • Comfort operating standard surveying instruments (total station, GPS, levels).

Conditions of employment

  • Successful completion of background screening and any required onboarding checks.
  • Must be able to perform fieldwork and travel to project sites as needed.

Compensation & benefits

  • Anticipated starting salary: $4,256 monthly ($51,072/year).
  • Full range: $4,256–$7,327 monthly ($51,072–$87,924/year).
  • Benefits may include (subject to client policy): health, vision, dental, life insurance; pension plan; paid leave (sick, vacation, personal); paid parental leave; tuition reimbursement; employee assistance programs; and standard state or municipal holidays. Exact benefits will be provided by the employing client.
