Job Summary

Confidential Client is seeking a PRN Lactation Consultant to provide inpatient, outpatient and telephone lactation support. This is a Part‑time / PRN, Day‑shift role (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM). Estimated pay: $77,587 per year (estimated).

The Lactation Consultant uses specialized education and clinical experience to manage the needs and care of breastfeeding families. In a family‑centered approach, the consultant assesses physiological, emotional, developmental and psychosocial needs and develops individualized breastfeeding plans. This role functions as a consultant, instructor, and mentor/preceptor to other health care professionals and clients in hospital and community settings.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions

• Inpatient consults:
  • Contact patient’s nurse for pertinent information
  • Visit mother at bedside for introductions and history intake
  • Assess infant feeding and latch
  • Develop individualized feeding plans
  • Refer for outpatient consults or breast pump rental
• Outpatient consults:
  • Complete history intake and assessment
  • Provide hands‑on assistance to resolve feeding problems
  • Deliver plan of care including follow‑up and referrals
  • Communicate findings to healthcare providers as needed
• Phone consultations:
  • Conduct follow‑up calls to NICU and outpatient mothers
  • Answer breastfeeding helpline inquiries
  • Complete performance improvement surveys
• Education & Community Outreach:
  • Teach breastfeeding classes in hospital and community settings
  • Design and implement educational programming
  • Contact class participants and prepare course materials
• Professional activities & teamwork:
  • Serve as a resource and mentor to staff, students and medical providers
  • Support performance improvement initiatives
  • Help establish policies that support exclusive breastfeeding
• Retail and operational tasks (as required):
  • Assist customers with breast pump selection, nursing bra fitting and retail purchases
  • Process breast pump registration and rentals; handle cash receipts
• Other duties as assigned in support of departmental operations and quality patient care

Required Education & Certifications

• Associates in Health Science or Associates Nursing required; Bachelor’s degree preferred
• BLS (Basic Life Support) — e.g., American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• IBCLC — International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (required)

Note: Lactation Consultants who are not yet IBCLC certified must work with an IBCLC preceptor and be checked off for inpatient, outpatient and phone consultations for six months after hire.

Experience & Skills

• Demonstrated breastfeeding experience (minimum clinical hours vary by background; typical eligibility ~2500 hours)
• Strong clinical judgment and ability to work independently while following departmental policies
• Infant feeding assessment and care for newborns, infants and lactating mothers
• Effective communication with multidisciplinary health care teams
• Experience teaching breastfeeding classes and performing telephone counseling
• Basic computer and keyboarding skills (word processing desirable)
• Commitment to confidentiality and professional conduct
• Enthusiasm for mentoring peers, staff and students
