About the role

This is a part‑time, entry‑level Laboratory Assistant position supporting daily lab operations in an ISO 17025–accredited microbiology environment. You will work under the Lab Supervisor and receive training on laboratory methods and safety procedures. This role is based in Birmingham, AL (on-site, non-remote).


What You’ll Do

  • Receive and log water samples; verify chain-of-custody forms, labels, and sample temperatures
  • Process samples for Legionella and heterotrophic plate count (HPC) testing under supervision
  • Read and record plate results at required time points
  • Perform basic water chemistry tests (pH, conductivity, hardness)
  • Prepare culture media and laboratory reagents
  • Maintain QC records, equipment checks, and temperature logs
  • Enter and verify data in spreadsheets or LIMS before report release
  • Assemble and ship sampling kits to field teams (bottles, coolers, forms)
  • Clean and organize the lab, biosafety cabinet, and glassware
  • Assist with inventory and supply tracking
  • Follow all laboratory safety, PPE, and biohazard procedures

What You Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Completed or completing a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field — OR an associate’s degree plus 1+ year of lab experience
  • Hands-on lab coursework (pipetting, aseptic technique, plating)
  • Strong attention to detail and accurate record keeping
  • Comfortable with Excel and basic data entry; experience with LIMS is a plus
  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 40 lbs
  • Able to work in a BSL‑2 laboratory and handle biohazardous materials safely
  • Team player who thrives in a fast-paced environment
  • Authorized to work in the United States

Nice to Have

  • Microbiology culture experience (membrane filtration, spread plate methods)
  • Experience in an accredited or regulated lab (ISO 17025 or similar)
  • Prior lab job, internship, or undergraduate research experience
  • Schedule flexibility

Compensation & Schedule

  • $18.00 per hour during a 3‑month training period; pay increase after a competency review
  • Part‑time, approximately 25 hours per week
  • This position is classified as CONTRACTOR and PART_TIME

Location

  • On-site in Birmingham, AL (Birmingham, Alabama) — not a remote role.
