Position Summary
Confidential Client is seeking an entry-level Associate Labor Relations Consultant to support labor and employee relations activities in Jackson, MI. This hybrid role requires in-office presence on scheduled days at the Jackson service center. The role provides hands-on experience in grievance administration, contract interpretation, investigation support, and building positive union-management relationships.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide training and coaching to first-line supervisors on labor relations fundamentals, contract provisions, grievance administration, performance management, and building relationships with local union leadership.
- Offer basic contract interpretation guidance to business leaders to ensure compliance, mitigate risk, and reduce grievance-related costs.
- Administer the grievance process (Step 1 and Step 2), including scheduling, preparation, research, and participation in hearings, arbitrations, and presidential hearings as needed.
- Partner with People & Culture Centers of Excellence to respond to employee inquiries and resolve issues in a timely manner.
- Assist with investigations into misconduct and performance issues for union-represented employees; recommend and document appropriate disciplinary actions under guidance from LR leadership.
- Support organization-wide initiatives and communications with front-line leaders, local union leaders, and employees.
- Provide data and reporting on staffing/headcount, retirements, transfers, grievances, and other operational HR metrics.
- Perform administrative functions related to job postings, promotions, transfers, and organizational management within the applicable contractual framework.
- Participate in cross-functional People & Culture initiatives and related projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Understanding of human resource services and basic labor relations principles.
- Ability to interpret contractual language and apply interpretations operationally.
- Familiarity with labor and employment laws at the state and federal level.
- Conflict resolution and dispute management skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with stakeholders at all levels.
- Data analysis skills and comfort with reporting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work semi-independently and escalate complex issues to subject matter experts when appropriate.
- Strong relationship-building skills and cultural awareness when working with diverse teams.
Education & Experience
One of the following combinations is required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, or related field AND 0–2 years of HR or labor relations experience supporting a unionized workforce;
OR - Associate’s degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, or related field AND 2+ years of relevant HR/labor relations experience;
OR - High school diploma AND 4+ years of relevant HR/labor relations experience.
Location & Schedule
- This is a hybrid position based in Jackson, MI. The role requires scheduled onsite days at the Jackson service center (specified days will be provided by the hiring team). Candidates must be within a commutable distance to Jackson, MI or willing to relocate.
