Role overview
This contract-to-hire Lab Technician role is onsite in Manhattan, NY supporting laboratory operations in fragrance formulation and compounding for a confidential client in the Scientific & QA industry. The position offers structured training, hands-on experience with formulation and sampling, and clear opportunities for growth.
What you’ll do
- Work directly with perfumers and formulation staff to prepare and develop fragrance formulations.
- Accurately compound fragrances by reviewing formulas and combining ingredients to precise specifications.
- Handle and track a large inventory of chemicals (approximately 200–300) while following safety and quality procedures.
- Label and bottle formulas with meticulous attention to identification and traceability.
- Perform sampling and application tasks to support fragrance testing and evaluation.
- Measure ingredients using pipettes and weighing equipment (gram precision).
- Complete data entry for formulas, samples, and lab records; maintain organized documentation.
- Collaborate with a small team of technicians to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Follow established laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and quality standards at all times.
- Participate in training on fragrance compounding techniques when required.
Qualifications
- Prior laboratory experience is required (fragrance experience is a plus but not mandatory).
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and chemicals accurately.
- Excellent math skills and comfort with precise measurement (weighing in grams).
- High attention to detail when compounding, labeling, and bottling.
- Ability to work under pressure and support a fast-paced workflow when needed.
- Eagerness to learn and a demonstrated willingness to be trained in fragrance compounding.
Additional skills (nice to have)
- Interest in entering or advancing within the fragrance industry.
- Experience as a perfumer’s assistant, in fine fragrance, or with fragrance application/sampling.
- Familiarity with SAP or similar data/systems.
- Comfort with pipettes and common laboratory instrumentation.
Work environment & schedule
- Fully onsite in Manhattan, NY — small lab team of ~7 technicians.
- Standard hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; no weekend work.
- Lab coat and standard PPE required while performing duties.
- The environment requires focus, accuracy, and effective teamwork; it can be fast-paced at times.
Compensation & benefits
- Pay: $23.00/hr (contract-to-hire). Individual offers within this range depend on qualifications, experience, geographic location, and other job-related factors.
