Role Overview
Confidential Client is seeking a Lab Scientist (Laboratory Scientist E) for the Genomic Sequencing Unit based in Lansing, MI. This full-time role focuses on molecular testing using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) — including amplicon, metagenomic, short‑read and long‑read whole genome sequencing — to generate high-quality sequencing data used for epidemiological outbreak tracing and public‑health surveillance.

- Pay: $25.03–$42.18 per hour
What You’ll Do
- Perform NGS sample preparation, library preparation, sequencing runs, and post‑run processing following established SOPs.
- Generate and QC sequencing data from amplicon, metagenomic, short‑read and long‑read whole genome sequencing workflows.
- Document results, maintain detailed laboratory records, and follow chain‑of‑custody procedures when required.
- Troubleshoot routine instrument and workflow issues; maintain laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Work with bioinformatics and epidemiology teams to support outbreak tracing and data interpretation.
- Adhere to biosafety, biosecurity, and quality assurance protocols.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, forensic science, or a related pure or applied science.
- Experience level will be considered under the following classification guidance:
- Laboratory Scientist 9: No specific type or amount of experience required.
- Laboratory Scientist 10: One year of professional laboratory experience equivalent to Laboratory Scientist 9.
- Laboratory Scientist P11: Two years of relevant professional laboratory experience, including one year equivalent to Laboratory Scientist 10.
- Strong attention to detail and record‑keeping skills.
- Ability to follow SOPs, maintain quality standards, and work in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands‑on experience with NGS workflows (amplicon, metagenomic, whole genome) and familiarity with short‑read and long‑read sequencing techniques.
- Prior experience in a public health, clinical, or research microbiology laboratory.
- Experience with laboratory information systems or sample tracking systems.
