Position Overview
Confidential Client is hiring a Junior Robotics Software Engineer to help bring hardware prototypes to life and build practical software tools that support robotic platforms. This hands-on role is ideal for early-career engineers who enjoy working across hardware and software — writing C++ and Python, maintaining ROS 2 nodes, and creating user-facing tools for testing, calibration, and diagnostics.
What You’ll Do
- Integrate new hardware prototypes with robot software systems.
- Rapidly develop proof-of-concept code to evaluate new components and designs.
- Build control, configuration, visualization, and diagnostic GUIs for engineers and operators.
- Create reusable tools for hardware bring-up, testing, calibration, data collection, and troubleshooting.
- Develop and maintain ROS 2 nodes, interfaces, drivers, and supporting applications.
- Collaborate with hardware engineers to define software interfaces and translate prototype requirements into working systems.
- Test integrated hardware/software behavior, analyze logs and telemetry, and diagnose cross-subsystem issues.
- Harden successful prototypes into reliable, documented, and maintainable engineering tools.
- Contribute to automated testing, simulation, and deployment infrastructure as priorities require.
- Participate in design reviews, code reviews, documentation, and field or lab testing.
Requirements
- 0–2 years of experience in robotics software, embedded systems, or hands-on engineering projects.
- Practical experience writing C++ and Python.
- Strong software fundamentals and debugging skills.
- Comfortable working with physical systems and imperfect prototypes.
- Some ROS or robotics project experience (deep ROS 2/DDS expertise not required).
- Familiarity with common communication interfaces/protocols such as CAN, serial, Ethernet, or USB where applicable.
- Able to build simple user-facing tools or GUIs.
- Bias toward experimentation, iteration, and shipping usable prototypes.
- Clear communication skills for cross-discipline collaboration.
Nice to Have
- Hands-on experience with hardware bring-up, microcontroller development, or sensor integration.
- Experience with simulation environments (Gazebo, Isaac Sim, MuJoCo) or containerization (Docker).
- Degree or coursework in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or related fields.
- Open-source contributions or personal robotics projects.
Compensation & Location
This is an on-site, full-time opportunity in Sunnyvale, CA. In accordance with California pay transparency requirements, the expected base salary range for this role located in Sunnyvale, CA is $90,000 – $130,000 per year. Actual compensation will be based on factors such as experience, skills, and qualifications. Total rewards may include equity, benefits, and performance-based incentives.
