Role Overview

We are assisting a Confidential Client in the Information Technology industry to hire a Junior Java Backend Developer / Data Engineer in Santa Monica, CA. This is an entry-level / early-career backend role focused on Java-based services and data engineering support. The Confidential Client is open to recent graduates and candidates with limited industry experience who are eager to learn, contribute, and grow.

What You’ll Do

• Contribute to backend development using Java (build, maintain, and test RESTful services).
• Support data engineering tasks such as ETL, data transformation, and basic pipeline maintenance.
• Write clear, maintainable code and unit tests; participate in code reviews.
• Troubleshoot performance and reliability issues in backend services and data flows.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (product, QA, and senior engineers) to deliver features.
• Document work, follow best practices, and adopt feedback to accelerate learning.

Qualifications (Required)

• Basic proficiency with Java and object-oriented programming concepts.
• Familiarity with SQL and working with relational databases.
• Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn data engineering concepts (ETL, data modeling).
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or equivalent coursework — recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
• Good communication skills and ability to work in a team.
• Motivation to build hands-on projects and a desire to improve technical interviewing skills.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Python for scripting or data tasks.
• Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) or containerization (Docker).
• Experience or coursework in data engineering, data pipelines, or analytics.

• Work location: Santa Monica, CA (onsite or hybrid as defined by the Confidential Client).
• Employment type: Full-time (entry-level/full-time positions are the focus).

Compensation & Notes

• Estimated pay (site estimate): $193,481 per year. Actual compensation will depend on experience, role specifics, and the Confidential Client’s pay practices. This figure is an estimate and may not reflect the final offer.
