Position overview

Confidential Client is seeking a Junior Interior Designer to support on-site healthcare design and construction operations at a Veterans Affairs hospital located at Fort Bliss, TX. This is a full-time, on-site position focused on healthcare interiors and project support for federal/military facilities.


Responsibilities

This role supports senior interior designers and project teams across planning, documentation, procurement, and installation phases:

  • Support senior interior designers and project managers with interior design services for healthcare facilities, ensuring compliance with VA standards and healthcare design guidelines.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating interior design projects from concept through installation for renovation, maintenance, capital improvement, and new construction projects.
  • Prepare construction documents, finish schedules, furniture plans, material boards, specifications, and presentation materials under senior direction.
  • Assist with Furniture, Fixtures & Equipment (FF&E) planning, inventories, procurement support, installation coordination, and asset tracking.
  • Coordinate paint, flooring, ceiling, lighting, wall coverings, casework, window treatments, cubicle curtains, artwork, and finishes for healthcare environments.
  • Develop and maintain finish schedules, room data sheets (RDS), material libraries, and other design documentation consistent with VA standards.
  • Support space planning and develop functional layouts that support patient care, accessibility, and operational workflows.
  • Prepare or support RDS, Project Room Contents (PRC), equipment layouts, and VA Space Equipment Planning System (SEPS) documentation.
  • Review finish samples, shop drawings, product submittals, and mockups for compliance with specifications.
  • Participate in site visits, field verification, punch walks, and installation inspections to verify design intent and quality.
  • Assist with project activation tasks including furniture installation, departmental relocations, and occupancy coordination.
  • Help prepare owner turnover documentation, Operations & Maintenance manuals, SOPs, and project closeout materials.
  • Maintain project files, budgets, schedules, vendor information, and material libraries.
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, contractors, consultants, vendors, and facility staff.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings supporting facility planning, construction, patient safety, infection prevention, and accessibility initiatives.
  • Research products and finishes that promote durability, sustainability, infection prevention, and ease of maintenance.
  • Communicate project updates to the project team and escalate issues to senior staff as needed.
  • Perform other interior design and project support duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, or a closely related field from an accredited program.
  • 1–3 years of professional interior design experience preferred; healthcare design experience is a plus.
  • Internship or entry-level experience supporting commercial, institutional, or healthcare projects preferred.
  • Working knowledge of interior design principles, space planning, color theory, furniture systems, finish materials, and building products.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
  • Experience assisting with construction documents, finish schedules, specifications, and FF&E documentation preferred.
  • Basic understanding of building codes, ADA accessibility requirements, life safety standards, and healthcare design guidelines.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and multitasking skills; ability to support multiple concurrent projects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to conduct site visits, field verification, and furniture or finish inspections as needed.
  • Ability to learn and apply VA design standards, healthcare planning processes, and facility activation requirements.

Important compliance items and clearances:

  • Possession of a valid Real ID is required for this position in accordance with federal regulations.
  • Must satisfy all applicable federal, VA, and facility-specific credentialing requirements.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a drug test and a thorough background investigation for access to a military installation. The background investigation for this position may extend beyond seven (7) years in accordance with federal law and Department of Justice guidelines.

Compensation & benefits

  • Pay range: $40.00 to $45.00 per hour.
  • Benefits include: 80 hours PTO accrual, medical, dental, vision, short-term disability, long-term disability, critical illness, and accident coverage.
