Role Overview

Confidential Client is seeking a Junior Full Stack Engineer to join a small, senior engineering team building healthcare software that handles protected health information (PHI) under HIPAA. You will write, test, and ship production code across the stack: Python backend services, modern JavaScript front ends, and hand-written SQL. This is an on-site role in Berlin, NJ with structured onboarding and close mentorship. Ideal candidates have 1–3 years of professional experience (or equivalent ability), strong engineering habits, and a security-first mindset.

What You’ll Do

  • Build and modify API endpoints and backend service logic in Python.
  • Implement and update front-end components and screens within large existing codebases.
  • Write, tune, and review SQL; author schema changes by hand when required.
  • Write tests alongside production code and treat test coverage as part of the deliverable.
  • Reproduce and fix defects reported by clients and internal QA.
  • Apply role-based authorization correctly and consistently.
  • Handle PHI appropriately in logging, error handling, audit trails, file paths, and messaging.
  • Use AI coding assistants to prototype or draft code, then verify, correct, and fully own any output submitted in a pull request.
  • Document features, known edge cases, and operational considerations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1–3 years professional experience or equivalent abilities.
  • Proficient in Python, including experience with at least one web framework and comfort reading unfamiliar code.
  • Strong SQL skills (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or similar): joins, aggregation, indexes, transactions, and DDL authoring.
  • Experience with an ORM and understanding of its impact on the database.
  • Modern JavaScript experience and familiarity with a component-based front-end framework.
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
  • Habit of writing automated tests; experience with testing frameworks.
  • Git fluency: branching, merging, resolving conflicts, and participating in pull-request review.
  • Demonstrated use of AI coding assistants on real projects and the judgment to validate generated code.
  • Command-line proficiency and experience setting up local development environments.
  • Clear written communication and the ability to describe bugs, fixes, and trade-offs.
  • Passion for technology and security; strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship (current or future).

Bonus / Nice-to-Have

  • Experience in HIPAA-regulated or other compliance-heavy engineering environments.
  • Familiarity with healthcare concepts (eligibility, charity care, appeals, consent/signature workflows, revenue cycle).
  • Containerized local development experience.
  • Exposure to OAuth2 / enterprise SSO and role-based access control.
  • Experience within CI/CD pipelines and automated quality gates.
  • Security-related certifications (Security+, ISC2, DevSecOps certs).
  • Consulting or service-provider background.
  • Familiarity with SOC 2, HIPAA, NIST, ISO, HITRUST, or similar frameworks.

How We Expect You to Use AI Tools

  • You own the output — “the assistant wrote it” is not an acceptable explanation in code review.
  • Verify generated code against our codebase and conventions; ensure it fits surrounding patterns.
  • Protect PHI: do not put PHI, credentials, or client-identifying production data into any AI tool outside approved, contractually covered channels.
  • Use AI to accelerate learning and productivity, not to replace critical thinking or learning on the job.

Schedule & Expectations

  • Onsite role in Berlin, NJ with occasional weekend or holiday work as needed.
  • Participation in an on-call rotation for after-hours support as required.
  • Meet deadlines and milestones with proactive communication when risks or blockers arise.
  • High attention to detail; avoid quick patches or temporary fixes that create technical debt.

What Success Looks Like

  • You own features end-to-end (API, front end, database, and tests) from ticket to production.
  • Pull requests rarely fail for authorization, PHI handling, or missing test coverage.
  • Defects you fix remain fixed and include tests to prevent regression.
  • Client-reported defect volume in areas you own trends down.
  • AI-assisted output you submit is indistinguishable in quality from well-reviewed hand-written code.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

  • Small, senior team with direct mentorship and real ownership.
  • Regulated healthcare context where security and privacy are engineering responsibilities.
  • A well-maintained codebase with strong test coverage and enforced quality standards.
  • Direct impact on clinical staff and patient-facing systems.
  • Exposure to diverse technologies, cloud, and security tooling.
  • Support for continuous learning and certifications.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $60,000 - $80,000 per year.
  • Attractive compensation and benefits.
  • Retirement savings plan.
  • Paid time off.
  • Paid training and certification support.
