Position Summary
This entry-level Junior Estimator role supports the estimating team to prepare accurate, competitive cost proposals for heavy civil construction projects. Reporting to Senior Estimators, you will assist with quantity takeoffs, subcontractor outreach, pricing research, bid assembly, and maintaining estimating data while developing technical skills in preconstruction.
What You’ll Do
- Assist in the full estimating process from initial review through bid submission.
- Prepare cost estimates for heavy civil construction scopes under supervision.
- Perform quantity takeoffs and measurements from drawings and specifications.
- Solicit and compile pricing from subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors.
- Research current material pricing, labor rates, and equipment costs.
- Maintain estimating databases and historical cost records.
- Keep organized estimating files, bid documentation, and project folders.
- Enter labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor pricing into estimating software.
- Prepare bid documents and proposal packages.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings and site visits when required.
- Flexible to assist on related construction tasks as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Basic understanding of construction methods and terminology.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office tools.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Willingness to learn heavy civil estimating practices.
- Ability to read construction drawings, specifications, and geotechnical reports.
- Willingness to learn estimating software such as HCSS HeavyBid, Trimble Viewpoint Vista, and Bluebeam.
- 0–3 years of estimating, project engineering, construction management, or heavy civil construction experience. Equivalent combinations of education and field experience will be considered.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or related field.
- Internship or co-op experience in construction or preconstruction.
Work Environment & Conditions
- Office-based with frequent computer work.
- Occasional travel to project sites and pre-bid meetings.
- Extended hours may be required during bid periods.
