What You’ll Do

Confidential Client is hiring a junior-level Data Scientist / Data Engineer in Pittsburgh, PA for a full-time role on its IT team. This is an entry-level position designed for recent grads, career changers, or candidates with limited hands-on experience who are ready to work on production-focused data projects and grow quickly.

• Work with product and business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into data-driven solutions
• Build and maintain ETL/data pipelines to ingest, clean, and transform structured and unstructured data
• Analyze data, build baseline models, and iterate toward production-ready solutions
• Implement SQL queries, Python scripts, and automated workflows to support analytics and ML workloads
• Assist with model evaluation, monitoring, and documentation for deployment-readiness
• Communicate technical decisions and model trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders

Responsibilities

• Develop, test, and maintain data ingestion and processing pipelines
• Explore datasets, perform feature engineering, and run experiments to evaluate model options
• Write efficient SQL and Python code for analysis and production tasks
• Help productionize models by preparing reproducible code, clear metrics, and deployment notes
• Collaborate with engineering and operations teams on MLOps best practices (CI/CD, monitoring)
• Document work, participate in code reviews, and apply feedback to improve deliverables

Qualifications

Minimum

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or related field (recent grads encouraged)
• Practical experience with Python and SQL (coursework, projects, internships, or bootcamps)
• Familiarity with basic ML concepts: supervised vs. unsupervised learning, common algorithms, and evaluation metrics
• Strong problem-solving, communication skills, and willingness to learn
• Ability to explain technical work in plain business language

Preferred

• Experience with data engineering tools (Airflow, dbt, Spark) or cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure)
• Familiarity with model deployment concepts, monitoring, and basic MLOps workflows
• Exposure to NLP, deep learning basics, or generative AI tools is a plus
• Portfolio projects or coursework demonstrating end-to-end work (data cleaning → model → evaluation → presentation)

Compensation & Location

Confidential Client offers the following for this position:

• Salary: $78,000 - $127,000 per year
• Employment type: Full time
• Location: Pittsburgh, PA (on-site or hybrid as determined by the client)
