Overview

Confidential Client is seeking motivated, early-career talent for a Junior Data Scientist/Engineer role. This is an entry-level, full-time position with remote flexibility and a primary focus on hands-on, production-oriented skills: data analysis, ETL/data engineering, model development, and software best practices. The role is open to recent graduates and career-switchers with foundational technical skills and demonstrable project work.

What You’ll Do

• Support data ingestion and ETL pipelines (batch and/or streaming).
• Write clean, maintainable code for data processing using Python (or Java where applicable).
• Query and model data using SQL; help design schemas and transformations.
• Assist in basic machine learning model development and evaluation (feature engineering, validation).
• Build and document reproducible analyses and data products.
• Collaborate with engineers and product teams to convert business questions into data-driven solutions.
• Use version control (Git) and follow team software-development workflows.
• Participate in technical interviews and mock screens; clearly explain project decisions and trade-offs.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Statistics, or related field — recent grads encouraged to apply.
• Practical experience with at least one programming language used for data work (Python preferred; Java experience is a plus).
• Solid SQL skills for querying, aggregation, and basic schema design.
• Familiarity with Git and collaborative development practices.
• Basic exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Oracle cloud, or similar) or eagerness to learn.
• Ability to explain project work and problem-solving approach clearly in technical interviews.
• Strong motivation to learn and complete hands-on, instructor-led training or certification prep when provided.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have

• Coursework or projects in data structures & algorithms (DSA) and object-oriented programming.
• Coursework or project experience in machine learning, statistics, or data visualization.
• Prior internship, project, or open-source contributions demonstrating applied skills.
• AWS or Oracle certification in progress or planned.
• Experience building or testing REST APIs or backend services (Spring Boot or similar).

Compensation & Location

• Base salary: $78,000 - $136,000 per year (range provided by Confidential Client).
• Employment type: Full-time.
• Location: Remote-friendly role. Hiring is managed for candidates in the United States; the authoritative work location is Reston, VA. Employment and final placement will be with Confidential Client.
