Position Overview

Confidential Client is hiring for a Junior / Assistant / Associate Engineer to join the Utilities team in Gilroy, CA. This full-time, on-site role supports planning, design, review, and construction of water and wastewater infrastructure. Depending on experience, candidates will be considered at the appropriate level within a three-tier civil engineering series.


What You’ll Do

  • Support planning, design, and delivery of water and wastewater capital improvement projects.
  • Assist with engineering analysis, project planning, and preparation of plans and specifications.
  • Conduct plan review, permitting coordination, field inspections, and construction support.
  • Coordinate with consultants, contractors, developers, regulatory agencies, and internal stakeholders.
  • Use engineering tools and software — AutoCAD, Bluebeam, GIS, Microsoft Office — to produce and review technical documents.
  • Track project schedules, budgets, and tasks to keep work moving forward.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment to evaluate alternatives and recommend practical solutions.
  • Communicate clearly with internal and external audiences and provide strong customer service to the community.

First-Year Projects (Examples)

  • Multiple water main replacements
  • Rehabilitation/repair of the Joint Trunk Sewer Main serving Morgan Hill and Gilroy
  • Design and construction of a new water well
  • Steel service line replacements
  • Rehabilitation or retrofit of existing wells to meet water quality standards

Qualifications

Note: candidates may be considered at the level that matches their education, certifications, and experience.

Junior Engineer

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Civil, Environmental, or related engineering; paid professional experience may substitute for education at the City’s discretion.
  • Valid Class C California driver’s license and safe driving record.
  • Willingness to learn, pursue training, and expand technical skills.
  • Must pass background check and post-offer medical exam (including drug test).

Assistant Engineer (in addition to Junior requirements)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
  • At least 2 years of full-time engineering experience (or equivalent).
  • California Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate preferred/required.
  • Progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) registration encouraged.

Associate Engineer (in addition to above)

  • At least 4 years of full-time engineering experience, including 2 years at an Assistant Engineer level (or equivalent).
  • Registered Professional Civil Engineer (PE) in California.

Compensation & Schedule

  • Salary range (all levels combined): $9,082.25 to $15,528.17 per month (equates to approximately $108,987.00 to $186,338.04 per year).
  • Additional step increases available after 5, 10, and 15 years of service per the classification schedule.
  • Opportunity for a 9/80 work schedule with every other Friday off.
  • The position is full-time and on-site. Excellent benefits are provided.

Requirements & Conditions

  • Successful applicants must pass a background check, State DOJ criminal records check, medical evaluation, and drug screen prior to appointment.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid CA Class C driver’s license (as required by assignment).
