About the Role

Confidential Client is hiring a Junior Accountant to join its Finance team at an on-site hospital location in Urbanización Puerto Nuevo, Puerto Rico. This is an entry-level, full-time (first-shift) position designed for recent Accounting graduates or early-career accounting professionals who want hands-on training in healthcare finance. You will work under the direct supervision of the Accounting Manager and receive training on general ledger accounting, month-end close, audit schedules, and healthcare reporting requirements.

What You’ll Own

  • Prepare and post routine journal entries to the general ledger with appropriate supporting documentation and correct account coding.
  • Reconcile assigned balance sheet accounts monthly — cash, prepaid expenses, accruals, and clearing accounts — and escalate unresolved reconciling items promptly.
  • Support accounts payable and accounts receivable activities: review invoices and receipts for accuracy, verify approvals, and assist with routine vendor/payer inquiries.
  • Prepare recurring close and audit schedules from established templates and maintain organized, audit-ready workpaper files.
  • Meet assigned deadlines within the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close calendars.

What You’ll Support

Performed under the Accounting Manager’s supervision, with responsibility expected to grow as you demonstrate proficiency:

  • Maintain fixed asset records — additions, disposals, and depreciation schedules.
  • Compile data for financial statements, variance analyses, and management reporting packages.
  • Assist with preparation of tax filings and government reports in coordination with internal and external partners.
  • Support annual budget and periodic forecasting data compilation.
  • Document accounting procedures and identify opportunities to strengthen accuracy and internal controls.
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial, patient, and employee information in accordance with policy and applicable law, including HIPAA.

What You Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • 3+ years of accounting, bookkeeping, accounts payable/receivable, or accounting internship experience; relevant internships or academic practicum experience will be considered.
  • Foundational knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); academic coursework is acceptable.
  • Working proficiency with Microsoft Excel (sorting, filtering, basic formulas) and a willingness to develop skills with lookups and pivot tables.
  • Full professional proficiency in Spanish and functional written/verbal English — Spanish is the primary working language for many internal teams; English is used frequently in documentation and external communications.
  • Demonstrated accuracy, attention to detail, ability to follow procedures, and good judgment to raise questions when needed.
  • Ability to work on-site in the San Juan metro area (Urbanización Puerto Nuevo) on a standard first-shift schedule.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States (no current or future employer sponsorship required).

Nice to Have

These are preferences, not requirements:

  • Coursework, internship, or work exposure in a hospital, healthcare, or other regulated industry.
  • Familiarity with an ERP or general ledger accounting system.
  • Exposure to external audit procedures through coursework or internships.
  • Progress toward CPA certification or intent to pursue it.
  • Basic familiarity with healthcare revenue cycle concepts or third‑party payor billing.
  • Strong written English in addition to Spanish.

Growth and Development

This role is structured as an entry point into the hospital’s Finance organization. The Junior Accountant receives hands-on training from the Accounting Manager in general ledger accounting, the close calendar, audit preparation, and healthcare-specific reporting. Demonstrated proficiency creates a clear path toward a Staff Accountant role.

Schedule and Overtime

  • First shift — Monday through Friday during standard business hours. No rotating or weekend schedule required.
  • Occasional extended hours may be required for month‑end close, year‑end close, audits, and budget season.
  • This position is classified as non-exempt. All overtime is compensated in accordance with applicable Puerto Rico law, including premium pay for hours worked in excess of eight (8) hours in a workday.

Compensation and Benefits

Estimated base (advertised on source): $33,728 per year — estimated.

Compensation is commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications. Benefits include:

  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Employer contribution toward healthcare coverage
  • Paid holidays
  • 15 days of paid vacation annually (above statutory accrual)
  • 12 days of paid sick leave annually
  • Christmas bonus in accordance with Puerto Rico law (Ley Núm. 148 de 1969)
  • Direct mentorship from the Accounting Manager and a defined development path within a leading healthcare organization

Benefit eligibility, accrual schedules, and waiting periods are governed by plan documents and organizational policy.

Working Conditions

This position is performed on-site in a professional office environment within a hospital facility. Typical duties require extended periods working at a computer, operating standard office equipment, communicating by phone and in person, occasionally moving about the facility, and occasionally lifting or moving objects up to 15 pounds. Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Conditions of Employment

After a conditional offer, the role requires a background check appropriate to the position and any site-access requirements, and health screening or immunization documentation where required by facility policy, contract, or law. Criminal history, if considered, is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
