What You’ll Do

This role performs histopathology laboratory processing and testing to support diagnostic pathology services. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Process surgical and biopsy specimens: fixation, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining
  • Prepare routine and specialized histology slides and maintain quality control on reagents and techniques
  • Operate and document work in laboratory information systems (LIS) and maintain accurate specimen records
  • Identify suboptimal or compromised specimens, perform corrective actions, and communicate issues to supervisors
  • Apply anatomic pathology principles and established protocols to perform specialized testing methods as needed
  • Organize and prioritize simultaneous workloads — both independent tasks and team assignments
  • Maintain laboratory safety, follow chain-of-custody and specimen handling procedures, and support QA/QC programs
  • Assist pathologists and lab leadership with technical tasks, troubleshooting, and process improvements

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following education/experience paths and hold required certifications:

  • Education options (one of):
    • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited college/university with a major in a health- or allied-sciences field relevant to histopathology (examples: clinical biology, microbiology, medical lab technology, chemistry, immunology, anatomy, physiology)
    • OR Baccalaureate degree with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (credit hours in both required)
    • OR Successful completion of two years of progressively higher-level graduate education (master’s or equivalent) with a major related to health/allied sciences
  • Certification:
    • Current ASCP Board of Certification histotechnologist (HTL) certification is required at the full-performance level
    • Board-eligible candidates (per ASCP rules) may be temporarily appointed under direct supervision while completing certification requirements
  • Experience:
    • For selection at the full-performance grade (GS-9 equivalent), one year of creditable experience equivalent to GS-7 is required
    • Experience must demonstrate the KSAs listed below (or equivalent)
  • Citizenship & language:
    • U.S. citizenship is required; non-citizens may only be appointed under applicable policy exceptions
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English is required

Key knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) required for higher-grade selection:

  • Knowledge of laboratory information systems and inter-connectivity
  • Proficiency in histopathology techniques, staining, anatomy and physiology sufficient to perform routine and specialized tests
  • Ability to identify suboptimal specimens and take corrective action
  • Strong organizational skills to coordinate multiple assignments
  • Skill applying anatomic pathology principles to new or difficult testing methods

Note on foreign education: Degrees completed outside the U.S. must be evaluated by a private organization approved by the ASCP for equivalency.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduation from a NAACLS-accredited histology/histotechnology program
  • Prior hands-on experience in a clinical histopathology lab (fixation, embedding, microtomy, processing, staining)
  • Experience with LIS workflows and quality assurance programs
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based pathology environment

  • Salary range: $72,849 - $115,848 per year

  • Physical requirements: Standing, walking, bending, twisting, and carrying light items as part of routine lab duties
